The nine distinct races in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War have been renewed in the Definitive Edition, and so too have their strongest warriors. Each of the nine factions boasts an ultimate unit that can only be recruited after fully upgrading the tech tree and capturing a Relic Point. These behemoths thunder across the battlefield with murderous intent, their overwhelming might capable of turning the tide of battle.

5 Best Ultimate Units in Dawn of War Definitive Edition

5) Squiggoth

In the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium, no matter how big you get, there is always something bigger. However, when it comes to the game’s setting, no unit towers as high as the Squiggoth. The Ork Relic unit, the Squiggoth, is the bulkiest monster in the game, with the largest health pool to match.

The Squiggoth excels in disrupting unit formations. The Stampede ability allows the monster to charge through the frontline and reach the weaker ranged units behind. It can also serve as a transport, safely carrying a unit of Nobz or Mega Armored Nobz with it to unleash them into the carnage, directly in melee range.

However, the Squiggoth’s size also becomes its primary weakness. The unit maneuvers slowly and can get stuck at every opportunity. This drawback keeps it from ranking higher among Relic units. Nevertheless, with the pathing update made in the Definitive Edition and the timely use of Stampede, the maneuverability issue can be managed.

4) Bloodthirster

Spawned through the sacrifice of a Chaos Sorcerer or Aspiring Champion, the Bloodthirster is a horned Greater Daemon armed with a wicked battle axe. In addition to its monstrous strength, the Bloodthirster is most notable for its mobility. Its giant leathery wings aren’t just for show, and they allow the daemon to fly over units and terrain. This ability makes the Bloodthirster an especially effective harassment unit, able to flank and snipe key structures before flying away. In an all-out battle, flying allows the Bloodthirster to wreak havoc upon the enemy’s backline and quickly take out powerful ranged units.

3) Baneblade

The fragile human soldiers of the Imperial Guard overwhelm opponents under the weight of their expendable manpower. And when that isn’t enough, the Cult Mechanicus blesses them with the most devastating weapons platform in the game: the Baneblade.

A Super-heavy tank with more guns than an ork can count, the Baneblade delivers long-range ordnance on an apocalyptic scale. Once recruited out of its dedicated structure, the tank forms the immovable core of the Imperial Guard army. Its various weapons deal incredible damage to all unit types and structures. The Demolisher Cannon is especially effective against bunched-up units, dealing swathes of AoE damage.

2) Avatar of Khaine

The Avatar of Khaine is a shard of Khaine, the Eldar war god. When he is summoned onto the battlefield, the avatar evokes fervor in his warriors and terror in his enemies. The flaming daemon swings a massive burning sword that is effective against all units.

The Avatar of Khaine is a giant slayer, capable of dueling and winning against the ultimate units of each faction. Additionally, recruiting him also increases the Eldar’s maximum pop cap, increases the production speed of buildings, and provides immunity to morale damage for all units near him.

1) Restored Monolith

Dawn of War’s Necrons faction is particularly lore accurate as it features not only the most overpowered units in the game, but also the most overpowered structure. The Necron’s Relic unit is the Restored Monolith, their headquarters building upgraded to its final form.

The Restored Monolith is a sepulchral pyramid that floats slowly across the battlefield. Its four Gauss Cannons scan the landscape on all sides. Its primary weapon is the Gauss Flux Arc, which unleashes a beam of antimatter at the enemy, creating a cataclysmic explosion. The weapon makes the Monolith extremely effective at disrupting unit formations, sending soldiers flying in all directions.

As if that weren’t enough, the Monolith can still recruit units while on the move, be repaired by Scarabs, and teleport. If it is somehow destroyed, the building teleports back to base to be repaired and upgraded once again. There are very few forces in the game that even stand a chance against a maxed-out Necron army centered around a Restored Monolith.
