Discover the secret boss by solving the Piano Puzzle in Chapter 4 of Deltarune and learn how to defeat him.
Deltarune Chapter 4 continues the game’s established trend of featuring a secret boss. While the boss fight is still difficult, it is far friendlier and ultimately heartwarming. The main challenge is finding the secret boss in the first place. Once you do, Susie is the only one who fights him, and items can’t be used during the battle.
How To Reach the Secret Boss
To fight the secret boss in Chapter 4, find the Golden Piano and solve its puzzle. You will have to backtrack and find three music sheets. Once you have them, play a specific sequence of notes on the piano to open a secret passageway in the study room’s fireplace. Refer to our detailed Golden Piano Puzzle guide here.
The three music sheets will vanish if you progress further in the story, past the second Sanctuary. Once the fireplace opens up, head through it to find the Magic Axe (Justice Axe). A cutscene will play, with Gerson demanding payment for the axe. He challenges Susie to cut a single hair on him and begins to dodge all her attacks. As the cutscene ends, the secret boss battle begins.

How To Beat the Secret Boss in Deltarune Chapter 4
As the fight begins, your first few attacks will completely miss the boss. When he attacks, the boss will turn your heart green, making it unable to dodge incoming attacks. However, you can still use your axe to block incoming attacks with the directional keys. All arrows are yellow, but the one that is going to strike you next turns red. Focus on the red arrows to quickly reposition your defense.
If you use the Rude Buster magic attack, the boss will deflect it. Press the confirm button (Z on keyboard, A on controller) to send it back. However, this does not seem to have a significant effect on the boss. The best course of action is to use Defend when your health is high, and Ok Heal when you take significant damage.
The boss will begin narrating the tale “Lord of the Hammer,” and after chapter two, a hammer will appear during combat. It will strike after all the arrows. Once it does, move your heart to either side to dodge Gerson attacking you himself.
Cast Ok Heal whenever your health falls below half. In the next attack, the boss will bounce a shell around. Dodge it by moving between the bottom right, center, and center right of the box.
Next, the Gerson will throw a cascade of axes at you. Dodge them by picking an area of the box and making minor movements to stay in the safe area between the falling axes. Susie will take less damage when her health is low, giving you more opportunities to keep healing. Continue blocking, dodging, and healing until the conversation comes to an end. The battle rewards you with the Justice Axe and a boost to Susie’s stats.
