In this guide, we’ll take a look at how you can get your hands on Unstable Cores in Destiny 2 and how to use them.

The Edge of Fate expansion for Destiny 2 is set to release on July 15, 2025, and will bring massive changes to the core gameplay experience. For instance, infusing your weapons and armor will become a key part of progression when the update lands. To infuse your gear, you’ll require a new form of currency called Unstable Cores.
In this guide, we’ll explore the importance of Unstable Cores in Destiny 2 and how you can get them.
How To Get Unstable Cores in Destiny 2

The Edge of Fate update will introduce a mechanic called Seasonal Power Level, which will allow certain gear pieces to drop at levels higher than the soft cap of 200 PL. When you acquire such a piece of gear, whether weapon or armor, you can dismantle it to get a few Unstable Cores. The exact number of Unstable Cores you receive from dismantling an item will depend on the Power Level of that piece of gear. Higher-level gear will drop more Unstable Cores than lower-level ones.
Besides the dismantling process, you can also earn a few Unstable Cores from within the Seasonal Hub. This is the new hub for daily and weekly challenges, which you can complete to earn various rewards. Some challenges will reward you with Unstable Cores, which is a great way to bolster your stockpile without dismantling high-level gear pieces.

How To Use Unstable Cores in Destiny 2
You can upgrade any gear that has a Seasonal Power Bonus beyond the soft cap of 200 PL. While upgrading to the soft cap level requires the use of Enhancement Cores, you’ll need to spend Unstable Cores to level up your weapons and armor beyond 200 PL. As you might have understood from this, the Edge of Fate expansion will render your Upgrade Modules useless.
You can dismantle any of these modules that you might have in your inventory. Dismantling them will give you 5000x Shimmer and 1x Enhancement Core from each Upgrade Module.
