Diablo 4 Season 9 has hit the ground running with tons of new content to indulge in. There’s a brand-new season questline that sees you dealing with the threat of the Horadrim. There are also new Horadric Strongrooms, new minidungeons that offer exciting new rewards. The season also has tons of new spells. As exciting as the new season is, it is not without its hurdles, and the first you’ll face is the dilemma of a new seasonal character.

While this dilemma was fairly confusing in past seasons, it is less so this season because it is mandatory. So, to answer your question of whether you should make a seasonal character—yes, you should. We shall discuss this in detail below.

As stated earlier, you should make a new seasonal character this season of Diablo 4. This is because making a seasonal character is the only way to access the seasonal content of Sins of Horadrim. Your pre-existing Eternal character cannot be used to access the Diablo 4 Season 9 content. This information comes directly from Rod Fergusson, the SVP of Blizzard Entertainment. Replying to a fan’s query on X, Rod Fergusson stated:

“Yes, to take part in the seasonal questline, mechanics, season journey, and battle pass, you will need to create a new seasonal character. Playing campaign with seasonal character (if you so desire or need to finish) will also progress the season journey and battle pass.”

This may come across as a bummer, but there is no reason to worry about making a new seasonal character. You retain the seasonal characters at the end of the season, so your builds and investments will stay with you. You can also transfer over Renown to your seasonal character, making the transition seamless.  If you’re looking to play the campaign again, you can also do so with the seasonal character. The seasonal characters can be used in campaigns and can also be involved in the Battlepass and Season Journey.
