Diablo 4 gives you the freedom to pursue different types of builds among the classes available. While some are good for harmless fun, for other builds, you might want to focus on approaching the endgame content. These builds need to withstand the damage dealt by the highly challenging enemies you’ll face as you get closer to the endgame.

If you’re playing a Necromancer, you’ll likely want to go with a Blood build for this particular purpose. The Drain Vitality skill in Diablo 4 can be a useful passive skill to invest in when you’re trying to create such a build. Let’s take a look at what this skill does.

Drain Vitality is a passive skill that offers Lucky Hit. So, whenever you hit an enemy with one of your Blood skills as a Necromancer, the passive skill will Fortify your life. The amount of fortification you receive depends on what level the skill is at. At its lowest, you’ll get a 2.5% fortification, while at the highest level, it’s 7.5%. Fortification of life ensures that the damage you receive is decreased drastically. If you manage to have as much Fortify as Life, you’ll reduce incoming damage by a whopping 15%.

You have to reach the fifth tier of your skill tree to unlock the Drain Vitality passive. You will need to get one of the skills just under this one to reach and unlock the passive skill.

When Should You Get Drain Vitality Skill in Diablo 4?

The Drain Vitality passive can be useful to some Blood Necromancer builds. The greatest benefit of unlocking this skill is that you won’t have to invest in any other useless ability to reach the passive in your skill tree. In fact, you can grab the Coalesced Blood skill on your way to Drain Vitality. Coalesced Blood is a great skill that increases your damage output when you have 80% or more of your HP remaining. Combining this with the effect of Drain Vitality will ensure that your health doesn’t fall below that level all that frequently.

We specifically recommend getting the passive skill if you’re trying to build the Blood Surge build. This build primarily relies on your Blood-based attacks as a Necromancer. So, you will be triggering Drain Vitality quite a bit with almost every strike. At the same time, Coalesced Blood will ensure increased damage output, allowing you to end fights early. Both of these effects work in complete synergy and ensure that your Blood Surge build has improved survivability.
