Has Marvel Rivals officially banned the use of custom mod skins? Learn all about it before you try applying a new mod to the game.

The mods in Marvel Rivals had been going strong since the game’s full release on December 6, 2024. This was until the recent update from NetEase that they are banning mods for good within their game.
Even during Season 0 (the “first” season of the game), NetEase didn’t officially support any mods. However, the modding community was still as active as ever, and the most popular mods were “reskins” of existing characters.
The modders didn’t mod any existing premium skin in the game but introduced some new skins to the mix. These included anime character models for the heroes and villains on the roster, or skins that weren’t already in the game.
However, NetEase has grown strict in its policies regarding these mods.
What Has Changed for Mods in Marvel Rivals?

The internet started flooding with angry Marvel Rivals fans when the news broke about NetEase banning the use of mods in their latest hero-shooter. People who are fond of these cosmetic changes will no longer be able to use them.
These mods only brought changes to your screen, meaning other players in the game would not be able to see it. So, if it isn’t a copyright issue, why is NetEase pulling the plug on it? Well, they didn’t clarify why they oppose the mods, but the game’s monetary structure hints at a possible answer.
Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play game on all platforms. Additionally, you don’t have to pay for any character (old or new) to unlock it. Moreover, players can unlock most of the costumes using in-game currency called Units, which can be earned by grinding.
Since Units take a lot of in-game grinding, Marvel Rivals can only earn through cosmetic micro-transactions. So, if modders keep producing interesting and hilarious skin mods, their prospect of selling premium content in the near future does not look very bright.
Hence, NetEase has banned these custom skin mods. We suggest that you uninstall the ones that you have on you because it might result in a ban from the game. You will probably be able to make another account but that would cost you your progress.
