Everything you need to know about Dying Light The Beast’s story, and whether you should play Dying Light 2 before jumping on the new game.

Dying Light The Beast is just a few days away from its launch. While the game was initially conceived as an expansion for Dying Light 2, it eventually evolved into a completely separate story. That being said, the game still shares a lot of gameplay commonalities with Dying Light 2. As it was planned as an expansion, The Beast is built on the foundations of Dying Light 2, albeit also incorporating the changes brought to the sequel with title updates.
However, while the game does share some narrative ties with Dying Light 2, The Beast is a completely separate story. As such, you don’t necessarily need to play Dying Light 2 to pick up and enjoy Dying Light The Beast. However, having played the previous games can help in other ways, particularly in terms of gameplay. Here’s everything you need to know about Dying Light The Beast, its story, characters, gameplay, and more.

Is Dying Light The Beast a Sequel To Dying Light 2?

Yes, technically, Dying Light The Beast is a sequel to Dying Light 2. However, the story of The Beast is more closely connected to the original Dying Light instead of the sequel. In Dying Light The Beast, you play as Kyle Crane, i.e., the protagonist from the original Dying Light (and The Following expansion). However, instead of being a regular human with extraordinary parkour abilities, Kyle is now a mutant. The Beast seemingly picks up after one of the endings of The Following DLC, where Kyle is subjected to a new form of the Harran Virus, and is subsequently experimented on (presumably by GRE).
However, Kyle eventually manages to break free of his confinement and escapes into Castor Woods. The story takes place primarily in Castor Woods and its neighboring regions. Timeline-wise, the events in Dying Light The Beast happen a few years after the ending of Dying Light 2. However, in terms of narrative, the two games share very little in common. Knowing Techland and their penchant for references and easter eggs, we might see some callbacks to Aiden and other characters from Dying Light 2, but that’s about it.
The Beast is Kyle’s story, with new side characters, as well as a whole new locale for players to explore.
Gameplay Similarities Between Dying Light The Beast and Dying Light 2

Given that Dying Light The Beast is built using the same tools as Dying Light 2, there are a ton of similarities between the two games. Firstly, The Beast retains the same parkour system as Dying Light 2, albeit with some adjustments. Movements and parkour, in general, are faster-paced in The Beast, owing to Kyle’s enhanced “mutant” abilities.
Furthermore, the parkour in the new game takes into account all the improvements that have been added to Dying Light 2 with title updates. In terms of combat, The Beast is more or less identical to Dying Light 2.
However, guns and other firearms seem to play a major role this time around. In the case of Dying Light 2, the game focused primarily on melee combat. In fact, the game did not even feature guns (outside of the Boomstick tool). It was only in one of the recent title updates that Techland added guns to Dying Light 2.
