Everything you need to know about Monster Hunter Stories 3 and whether you need to play the previous games in the series or not.

The Monster Hunter Stories series is way more niche than the mainline games. However, that’s something Capcom is set to change with the upcoming third title in the series, Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection. Unlike the mainline Monster Hunter games, the Stories takes a more “JRPG-like” approach to gameplay. While the themes and some of the gameplay systems in Stories are identical to the mainline titles, the storytelling as well as progression is more akin to something like Persona or classic Final Fantasy games.
That said, similar to the mainline MH games, the Stories series follows a “standalone” approach when it comes to sequels. As such, you don’t need to play any of the previous games in the series before heading to MHS3. However, there are benefits to having played the past games.
Here’s everything you need to know about Monster Hunter Stories 3’s gameplay systems, and how it connects to past titles in the series.
Is Monster Hunter Stories 3 Connected To Previous Games In the Series?

No, much like the past Monster Hunter Stories, or even the mainline titles, Monster Hunter Stories 3 features a completely standalone story. While the themes, setting, and the Monsters are shared between all the games of the series, each title offers its own unique storyline. As such, every Monster Hunter Stories game serves as a great starting point for newcomers. That said, there are still advantages to having played the previous Monster Hunter Stories games before jumping into MHS3.
For starters, the combat system in MHS3 is almost identical to MHS2, albeit with some minor QoL changes. Much like the past games, the core of combat in MHS3 revolves around the “rock-paper-scissors” system. Essentially, the attacks (for both the Rangers and the monsters) come in three types – Power, Speed, and Technical. The whole system revolves around the fact that Power wins against Technical, Technical wins against Speed, and Speed wins against Power.
Furthermore, the game will also feature the same monster breeding and befriending system. As such, having played the past games will give you a good idea of how the gameplay works in MHS3.

Is Monster Hunter Stories Connected To Mainline Monster Hunter Games?

No, Monster Hunter Stories games aren’t connected to mainline Monster Hunter titles. However, both franchises are governed by the same themes and limitations. The combat system in Monster Hunter Stories is certainly quite different. However, MHS does feature the same fundamentals as the mainline titles. For instance, if you’re fighting Rey Dau in MHS3, it will feature the same weaknesses as in MH Wilds. The same goes for the weapons you have access to in MHS.
