Does Satoru Gojo die in Jujutsu Kaisen? This is a question that has been trending within the entire Jujutsu Kaisen fandom, especially among the anime-only fans. Given that Gojo was pitted against the King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna, immediately after his release from the Prison Realm, fans of the blue-eyed sorcerer all over the world have been concerned with his fate at the end of the Shinjuku Showdown.

Unfortunately for fans of the character, Satoru Gojo met his demise at the hands of Ryomen Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 236. Seeing their favorite character bite the dust, that too in an extremely gruesome manner, traumatized almost the entire fandom, who are now dreading the day when Gojo’s death gets animated in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.

Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 235 ended with Satoru Gojo severely injuring Ryomen Sukuna with a massive Hollow Purple attack, thereby seemingly securing his victory. As such, one can only imagine the collective shock and horror of the entire fanbase when they saw Gojo’s body on the ground, sliced in half in an extremely gruesome manner in chapter 236.

Chapter 236 began with Gojo at an airport, having a conversation with all of his deceased friends. This airport scene is perhaps what convinced the entire fandom that their worst nightmare may have come true after all.

All of a sudden, the scene shifted to a haunting picture of Gojo’s dead body. As he lay on the ground, defeated and his body cut into several pieces, Sukuna was seen explaining how he managed to kill Gojo. In his fight against Gojo, Sukuna managed to learn how to tear through his Infinity by using Mahoraga as a “model”. By expanding the target of his Dismantle attack to not just Gojo, but the space and the entire world around him, Sukuna was able to land an attack that rendered Gojo’s Infinity useless, and sliced his entire body into two halves.

After the King of Curses admitted that it was a near impossible technique to pull off, he praised Satoru Gojo for his efforts during the battle and promised never to forget him for the rest of his life. As Sukuna stood tall over Gojo’s dead body, the latter slowly passed away with a satisfied smile on his face.

What Gojo Faced in the Afterlife

In the afterlife – or, in his case, as represented in the airport scene, Satoru Gojo was greeted by his deceased best friend, Suguru Geto. However, seeing Geto again disappointed Gojo, since it refuted his belief that people are always alone when they die.

After reflecting on all the things he still had left to do in the real world, Gojo discussed his fight against Sukuna with Geto. To Geto’s surprise, Gojo admitted that he was no match for the King of Curses in the first place. He expressed disappointment that Sukuna couldn’t give it his all during their fight. Gojp also mentioned feeling sorry for Sukuna, since he could relate to the loneliness that came with unrivaled power.

He then went on to express his regret over not being able to reach Sukuna despite giving it his all. However, Gojo claimed that he had fun in his battle against Sukuna. Moreover, he was glad to have died at the hands of a stronger opponent, instead of passing away due to old age. Lastly, Gojo said that his only disappointment with his death was that he didn’t have Geto by his side to wish him luck for his final battle.

In the closing moments of the airport scene, it was revealed that Gojo and Geto were surrounded by all of his deceased friends, including Yu Haibara, Kento Nanami, Riko Amanai, and even Masamichi Yaga. Moreover, all of them, including Gojo, appeared as their past selves from the Hidden Inventory arc. It signified that Gojo, in his final moments, had chosen to go South.

For those unaware, Kento Nanami had revealed in this scene that after dying, if a person chooses to become someone new, they should head North. Conversely, if a person chooses to return to their former selves, they should head South. From this airport scene, we can infer that in his final moments, Gojo chose to return to the time when he was happiest, with Geto and his other friends during high school, thus becoming free from the burden of being “The Strongest”.

The Aftermath of Gojo’s Death

The aftermath of Gojo’s death had major repercussions for every single character in Jujutsu Kaisen. With Gojo gone, the jujutsu sorcerers found themselves in turmoil, having lost their biggest hope of defeating Sukuna. They each had to each lay down their lives on the line in order to finish what Gojo started. Fortunately, they had prepared an elaborate plan beforehand, should the worst case scenario happen. Every single sorcerer played a crucial role, with perhaps Yuji Itadori and Yuta Okkotsu having the biggest responsibilities.

Gojo’s death also triggered a horrifying development, which was part of a plan Yuta had carefully crafted. If Gojo were to fall in battle against Sukuna, Yuta would have to kill Kenjaku and copy his Brain-Swapping technique. With this, Yuta would have to risk his life and take over Gojo’s corpse to fight Sukuna one last time. However, he reserved this method as a last resort, which Gojo willingly agreed to before his fight.

Satoru Gojo’s death is perhaps the one event that changed everything in Jujutsu Kaisen. The loss of their strongest pillar of hope not only deeply depressed majority of the fans, but also spelled doom for the remaining characters. The sheer brutality and unexpected timing of Gojo’s death shocked fans to their very core, who perhaps, still haven’t recovered from it to this day.
