Everything you need to know about Kingdom Come Deliverance 2’s PC port and whether it will have Denuvo DRM at launch or not.
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, much like the original title, is a game that’s best experienced on a PC. Although the game looks absolutely stunning on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, it’s even better on a competent enough PC. Much like the previous title, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is an open-world role-playing game with a robust combat system, intriguing characters, and a gripping narrative. The game is available on all current-generation platforms, including PC. Furthermore, on PC, the game is available via both Steam and Epic Games Store. Considering the current climate of PC releases, some players might be wondering whether the sequel’s PC version will come with additional DRMs or not.
Although Kingdom Come Deliverance does technically have a DRM, it’s not the kind that’s mostly frowned upon by the PC community. Essentially, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 on PC does not have Denuvo DRM. Instead, the only DRM that players have to contend with is Steam or Epic Games Store’s own overlay. Here’s everything you need to know about Kingdom Come Deliverance 2’s PC version and Denuvo DRM.
Does Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Have DRM?
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 on PC does not have any form of additional DRM, i.e., Denuvo, Enigma, VM Protect, etc. Instead, the only DRM that the game has is the storefront (launcher) where you bought or redeemed the game. Furthermore, players can also get the game on GOG Galaxy, albeit after its official release. As of writing this article, the game is available to add to your Wishlist on GOG Galaxy.
For those unaware, GOG Galaxy hosts completely DRM-free versions of games. This means that once you buy a game on GOG Galaxy, you’ll receive an offline installer that you can keep with you forever. This allows you to “own” the game and install it, even without an internet connection.
Although DRMs do help limit the “piracy” of PC games to a certain extent, more often than not, they end up being a hindrance for paying customers. There have been documented instances of games with Denuvo performing worse than their “DRM-free” versions. The most notable example of this would be Capcom’s Resident Evil Village and Devil May Cry 5 PC ports. DRMs essentially allow publishers and platform holders to authenticate a copy of a game before it can be installed and played by the end user.
The process of authentication is optimized to not affect the game’s performance. However, in some cases, the constant authentication ends up using precious CPU resources, which then hurts the game’s performance. In the case of Resident Evil Village, players found the game to perform roughly 10-15% better without Denuvo, especially on PCs with older-gen CPUs. As such, it’s understandable why PC players detest Denuvo and any form of DRM in games.
