What is EOMM?
Hi Rivals! As our game continues to thrive, we want to reiterate that Marvel Rivals does not use EOMM. We are currently working on a video to demonstrate our developer insights on the matchmaking and ranking system, which is expected to be released next week.

EOMM stands for Engagement Optimized Matchmaking, and it helps find matches based on your immersion pattern. This system works based on your engagement with the game. The motive is to keep you stuck in a win-lose loop, so you will spend more time playing that game.
Data like purchase history, winning streaks, and other aspects are used to create a sweet spot for players, so they never quit the game. In the latest post, the developers of Marvel Rivals denied any use of EOMM in their game.
Difference Between EOMM and SBMM

We learned about EOMM just now, but there is one more system that is used in most games. SBMM, or Skill-based Matchmaking, is a system that helps you find matches according to your skills. With this system, your performance data is tracked, so the next game you play will feel challenging and fun. SBMM tests your skills while making you better at the game, but EOMM focuses on keeping you logged in for a longer period.
SBMM is quite common in competitive games to pair players of the same skill together. On the other hand, EOMM is used in casual games, so players spend more time playing them. Putting EOMM in a competitive game is not a good thing, as the players might go on a sudden losing or winning streak, creating chaos among others. Thankfully, Marvel Rivals does not use this system, and we will learn more about that in the future dev talks.
