The Monster Hunter Stories games have always offered a unique take on the traditional Monster Hunter experience. While the mainline Monster Hunter games do feature stories of their own, most of the narrative in those titles is usually tied to the Monsters themselves, instead of the Hunters. This is where the Monster Hunter Stories games truly shine. And Monster Hunter Stories 3 is no different from this rule.
The latest title in the series, much like its predecessors, features heavy emphasis on narrative and storytelling. While the game has received updates to its core combat system, its primary focus is the story and characters. That said, one of the biggest draws for a Monster Hunter game is its multiplayer and co-op offering.
As such, newcomers to the series might be curious about the multiplayer aspects of MHS3. Unfortunately, much like the past games in the Stories franchise, MHS3 does not feature any multiplayer modes. Here’s everything you need to know about Monster Hunter Stories 3’s game modes.
Monster Hunter Stories 3 Game Modes, Explained
Monster Hunter Stories 3 is a strictly single-player action-RPG. That said, the game does offer a variety of gameplay options that let you create your own party and builds. In a number of gameplay-related aspects, MHS3 is very similar to the mainline Monster Hunter games. However, the biggest difference between the two is the “party mechanic” in the Stories games.
In Monster Hunter Stories, you’re never on your own. Apart from your “Monsties,” you have access to an entire party of like-minded individuals, in MHS3’s case, Rangers (and Riders). While you primarily control your custom Rider, you can issue commands and engage in party synergies with other characters in your party.
The party system in Monster Hunter Stories works very similarly to something like the Persona games, or most recently, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. That said, the combat in MHS does feature the usual Monster Hunter flair. You do get the option between different weapon types, with each offering its own advantages and disadvantages.
While Monster Hunter Stories can definitely benefit from a co-op multiplayer mode, it’s not something that Capcom thinks is fitting for the series. Also, if you’re looking for a fun co-op Monster Hunter experience, there’s always the mainline titles to scratch that itch.
Monster Hunter Stories 3 Release Date and Platforms
Monster Hunter Stories 3 is scheduled to be released on March 13, 2026. The game is coming to all current-generation platforms, including the Nintendo Switch 2, and is currently available for pre-order on all digital storefronts.
