One ill-fated day, these siblings lose their family when a demon attacks them, leaving Nezuko transformed into a demon. With no other choice, Tanjiro sets out on a journey to restore Nezuko’s humanity and bring her back to the life they once knew.
Nezuko played a crucial role in the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, and in the end, she successfully regains her humanity. However, fans often wonder: what happens to Nezuko in the end? Does she die? Let’s explore the answer and her journey throughout the series.
Nezuko’s Fate in Demon Slayer
The short answer to this question is no; Nezuko does not die in Demon Slayer. Her willpower is incredibly strong, as she never lets go of the small humanity she has left in her, which prevents her from becoming a full demon.
She is constantly challenged by everyone, as they are skeptical about how a demon could support humans. Eventually, one cannot help but fall for her cuteness and charm.
In a sense, before the epilogue, her exact fate is not specified. It is implied that she dies of natural causes after living a long and fulfilling life as a human. Even though it is not explicitly stated, the presence of her descendants suggests it.
Nezuko’s Journey: From Human to Demon
Nezuko is a sweet and caring girl. She takes on the responsibility of an older sister and takes care of her siblings and household chores. She prioritizes their well-being over her own needs and stays devoted to protecting the people she cares about, even after transforming into a demon.
When she transforms into a demon, Nezuko loses a significant portion of her memories. However, some of her emotions remain intact, as she can still cry when sad, smile when happy, and become angry when someone hurts Tanjiro. Her demon transformation happens when her wounds are exposed to demon blood.
In the initial episodes, Giyu mistakes Nezuko for a bloodthirsty demon and attempts to behead her. Tanjiro swoops into the battle by tricking Giyu, but unfortunately, as he does not have any experience in fighting, he is unsuccessful and gets knocked out. Something happens to Nezuko, and her protective instincts kick in as she shields her brother. This action makes Giyu realize she is different from other demons and allows them to live.
As a demon, she does not shy away from battles, which is very different from her original nature. She protects her brother and her allies, whom she views as family (due to the influence of Sakonji Urokodaki). Her willpower is so strong that she refuses to consume human blood. For instance, when Sanemi Shinazugawa tries to tempt her with blood, she resists. In the end, she proves that the Kamado family is resilient and strong-willed.
Surviving Countless Battles
Throughout her journey with Tanjiro in search of a cure, Nezuko encounters many battles. She proved to be a valuable asset, showcasing her strength and her unshaken willpower. While she often appears docile, Nezuko demonstrates time and again that she is more than capable of being a formidable opponent. Some of her most important fights include:
- Nezuko vs. Temple Demon – This was the first fight she had against a demon. She won the fight by beheading him with a swift kick.
- Nezuko vs. Susamaru and Yahaba – During the Asakusa Arc, she faces these demons. Susamaru used temari balls Yahaba, which manipulates vectors as a weapon. Nezuko could keep up with the fight and improved her fighting skills.
- Nezuko vs. Daki – During the Entertainment District Arc, Nezuko faced her toughest battle yet against Daki. She awakened her Berserk Demon Form, which helped her with instant regeneration and immense strength. In this arc, after everything is over and Uzui is gravely injured, she saves him from certain death using her healing abilities.
- Nezuko vs. Muzan Kibutsuji – This is one of the most important fights for her as it is more about her resisting Muzan and caving into becoming a complete demon, which leads her to finally become a complete human soon.
Nezuko’s Immunity to the Sun
All demons in the Demon Slayer universe burn to ashes when exposed to sunlight. Nezuko, however, is the first demon to be immune to the sun. This miraculous ability makes her almost invincible, shocking everyone around her, from Muzan to the Demon Slayer Corps.
It is believed to be impossible for a demon to achieve this. During the fight between Tanjiro and Hantengu (a demon), Tanjiro has to make a difficult decision to leave Nezuko out in the sunlight. This decision was fruitful to Tanjiro as it helped Nezuko become immune to sunlight.
Muzan desired to consume Nezuko, believing she was the key to fulfilling his dream of becoming immune to sunlight. His obsession with this ability ultimately led to his downfall.
Nezuko became unique among demons, and her immunity to sunlight also meant that she was slowly regaining her humanity. This ability later contributes to her full recovery, allowing her to return to being human.
Nezuko in the Epilogue
After she regains her humanity, her demonic traits disappear, and she becomes a normal girl once more. This transformation is made possible through Tamayo’s medicine. Later on, she continues living a peaceful life, as demons have been wiped out of existence. With no fear of future battles, she is finally able to live in peace.
While it is never explicitly stated that Nezuko marries Zenitsu, glimpses of future generations show descendants who resemble both Nezuko and Zenitsu. This strongly implies that they start a family together.
Conclusion
At the end of Season 3 – Swordsmith Village Arc, her transformation made fans emotional as finally she was also able to communicate. Nezuko eventually became the key to the success of demon slayers, finally able to turn the tides towards their victory, which builds up towards the start of the Infinity Castle Arc.
We do not see her directly in fights, as she would become a target. Instead, Nezuko becomes Tanjiro’s motivation. In the end, Muzan is defeated, and goodness triumphs over evil.
