Doom The Dark Ages, the latest title in the iconic first-person shooter franchise, is arguably the most visually impressive game in the entire series. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone considering the history of Doom games and its developer — id Software. Much like its predecessors, Doom The Dark Ages is built using id Tech. However, the latest iteration of the engine comes with some really significant improvements over its previous renditions. The Dark Ages is still built using id Tech 7, the same engine that powered Doom Eternal and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. However, for the latest Doom title, id Software has made some major changes to the engine’s graphical capabilities.

However, the improvements made to the game come at the cost of significantly ramped-up system requirements. In fact, the game’s recommended specifications include GPUs like RTX 3080 and RX 6800. That said, here’s everything you need to know about Doom The Dark Ages’ official PC system requirements.

Doom The Dark Ages PC System Requirements

Doom The Dark Ages uses the same highly modified id Tech 7 that powered MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Much like Indiana Jones, The Dark Ages also requires a GPU with support for hardware ray-tracing. This means the game won’t be playable on Nvidia’s Pascal architecture GPUs, i.e., RTX 1060, 1080, 1080ti, or even 1660ti (or Super). While these GPUs might be capable in terms of VRAM, the lack of dedicated ray-tracing processors is a bottleneck. Furthermore, the game is also very demanding in terms of CPU resources. The recommended CPU for Doom The Dark Ages is a Ryzen 7 5700X or Core i7 12700K equivalent.

That said, here’s a look at the minimum and recommended PC specifications for Doom The Dark Ages:

Minimum:

  • OS: Windows 10 64-Bit / Windows 11 64-Bit
  • Processor: AMD Zen 2 or Intel 10th Generation CPU @3.2Ghz with 8 cores / 16 threads or better (examples: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or better, or Intel Core i7 10700K or better)
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA RTX 2060 SUPER or better, AMD RX 6600 or better
  • Storage: 100 GB available space

Recommended:

  • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
  • OS: Windows 10 64-Bit / Windows 11 64-Bit
  • Processor: AMD Zen 3 or Intel 12th Generation CPU @3.2Ghz with 8 cores / 16 threads or better (examples: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X or better, or Intel Core i7 12700K or better)
  • Memory: 32 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA RTX 3080 or better, AMD RX 6800 or better
  • Storage: 100 GB available space

Suffice it to say, the upcoming Doom game requires pretty beefy PC hardware, and that’s for a good reason. Doom The Dark Ages, much like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, has ray-tracing baked into its lighting systems. You cannot completely turn off RT in the game. From the general reflections and shadows to the game’s global illumination, everything features RT.

Doom The Dark Ages File Size

According to the game’s PC system requirements, Doom The Dark Ages requires roughly 100 GB of storage space on PCs and consoles. Furthermore, id Software highly recommends installing the game on an SSD. Even for the game’s minimum system specifications, id Software has mentioned an SSD as mandatory. This is understandable considering the game is built for current-gen systems. Surprisingly enough, The Dark Ages’ file size is roughly identical to that of its predecessor, Doom Eternal. However, it is likely that with the post-launch Campaign DLCs, the file size will increase well beyond 100 GB.
