Each Secret Letter corresponds exactly to a single item you want. If you want a particular character or weapon, you must hold the matching Secret Letter.

Your first goal is to gather Secret Letter Clues, which act as the base currency for making full Secret Letters. You will earn these clues from several activities like:

- Main Story Quests: Advancing through story chapters often rewards you with specific clues.
- Side Quests: Extra missions like “Go, Geniemons!” or “Can I Keep It?” grant additional clues.
- Enemy Drops: Regular enemies and dungeon bosses have a chance of dropping clues.
- Achievements: Certain achievements also come with clue rewards.
Basically, any time you are playing actively, you will be picking up clues without even noticing it.
Once you have enough clues, usually 10 clues for one Secret Letter, you can head to the in-game shop and exchange them. Here, you get to choose the exact Secret Letter you want. So if you are focused on unlocking a particular weapon or character, you can target it directly instead of leaving things up to random luck.
After obtaining a Secret Letter, your next stop is the Covert Commissions section. Before starting a mission there, you will select which Secret Letter you want to use. The one you choose decides the possible rewards for that mission.
These missions come in various types, like Dismantle, Expulsion, and Exploration. They refresh hourly, so you always have something new to do. Once the mission is done, you will see three random rewards from a total pool of six, and you get to pick one. That’s your chance to grab the item or shards linked to your chosen Secret Letter.
Get Secret Letters Directly in Duet Night Abyss
While exchanging clues is one path, there are ways to obtain Secret Letters outright without collecting clues first.
- Nocturnal Echoes: This weekly boss challenge drops complete Secret Letters for all characters and weapons. Different bosses offer different sets of letters.
- Immersive Theatre: This limited-time mode focuses on the newest character in the game. During its event period, you can earn that character’s Secret Letters directly, usually around four per completion. Once the event ends, those letters move to Nocturnal Echoes.
- Mystic Maze: A roguelike game mode that also hands out Secret Letters as rewards when you reach certain milestones.
These sources are ideal if you want faster access to specific letters without depending on clue farming.

Eventually, you will start getting Secret Letters for items or characters you have already maxed out. Don’t worry; those aren’t wasted.
