What Lurks Beyond the Pines is a side quest in Dying Light The Beast that sees you searching for Eli’s missing father. After you save the survivors in the Life After Life quest, Eli informs you that his father has been missing for the last two days. He has a rough idea of where his father is, and the task of finding his dad seems fairly simple.
What unfolds, however, is a horrifying side quest that sees you navigating volatile nests and setting up explosives. What Lurks Beyond the Pines is one of the hardest side quests in the game, and if you’re stuck on this one, our guide is here to help.
How To Start What Lurks Beyond the Pines in Dying Light The Beast
You acquire the What Lurks Beyond the Pines quest by talking to Eli in the town hall shortly after completing the Life After Life quest. He’ll be inside the offices on the first floor of the building. If you’re having trouble finding this quest, simply open your map and pin the side quest marker (exclamation point) on your map. This will make the marker appear on your compass, making Eli easy to find.
How To Complete What Lurks Beyond the Pines in Dying Light The Beast
You have to clear the following objectives to complete the What Lurks Beyond the Pines quest in Dying Light The Beast:
- Get to Eli’s family cabin in the National Park.
- Investigate William’s house.
- Find the entrance to the nearby caves.
- Find William in the caves.
- Connect the first explosive.
- Connect the second explosive.
- Follow and check the cable leading to the third explosive.
- Fix the broken part of the cable.
- Connect the fourth explosive.
- Talk to William.
- Find a way out of the caves.
- Talk to Eli back in the town hall.
What Lurks Beyond the Pines Walkthrough
Finding William
You begin the What Lurks Beyond the Pines quest by talking to Eli in the town hall. He states that his dad is missing and suggests checking out the family cabin in the National Park. Head to this marked location, and you’ll find a map and a key leading to a cave.
Use the key to access the marked caves nearby, and keep heading inside till you find William sitting on a chair overlooking a volatile nest.

Setting Up the Explosives
Talk to William, and he’ll believe you’re Eli due to his dementia. You can then choose to pretend to be Eli or give him the truth straight. Regardless of what you choose, the quest will play out in the game. The rest of the conversation will give you a glimpse at his cruel past, one tied to the very cave you’re in. He wants you to destroy the cave with explosives, and you’ll have to connect cables to do so. Take the cable beside him and connect it to the first explosive by following the objective marker. You have to then do this again for the second explosive.
While you go about doing so, do not fall to the ground anywhere near the first two explosives. There are dozens of zombies down below, and you will not be able to fight them. To make things worse, we also spotted a volatile running around in the dark during our playthrough. Stick to the rafters and the ledges along the walls of the cave to stay safe.
After you’ve connected the two explosives, you’ll notice that something is faulty with the third. You have to use your survivor’s sense and follow the cable till you find the fault. The faulty portion of the cable is right beside a resting volatile on the ground. Use a decoy to lure all the zombies away and sneak to the cable to quickly fix it. Rush back and climb up before the zombies come back, and it’s on to the fourth explosive. Connect the fourth explosive and return to William to progress.

Escaping the Caves and Talking to Eli
Once you set up the explosives for William, he’ll then decide to set them all off at once, but not before pushing you out of harm’s way. As you crash into the water below, you then have to swim your way out of the cave as it collapses. There’s only one linear path to follow, so this is the easiest section in the game. Head out of the caves and travel back to the town hall. Tell Eli of the events that transpired to complete the quest.
