The Mountaintops are easily among the most overlooked Shifting Earth events in Elden Ring Nightreign, and for good reasons. Unlike the Crater or even Noklateo, the Mountaintops don’t really offer a boon that works against all Nightlords. Furthermore, if you don’t defeat the Frost Wyvern, you don’t even receive a Legendary weapon for your efforts. In most cases, going to the Mountaintops is simply a waste of time, and you’re better off clearing the rest of the map on Day 2. However, there are also perks to visiting the Mountaintops. In fact, against specific Nightlord bosses, the Mountaintop essentially guarantees a victory, as long as you’re appropriately leveled and geared.

However, in typical souls-like fashion, the game doesn’t really specify which bosses the Mountaintop is most effective against. Here’s everything you need to know about the Mountaintops in Elden Ring Nightreign and how to use them efficiently.

Similar to other Shifting Earth events, the Mountaintops appear randomly in a run. While the layout of the Mountaintop, including the boss and enemy placements, remains identical across runs, its appearance is completely RNG. However, if you completed the Everdark Sovereign Expeditions at least once, you can force-spawn the Mountaintop via the Everdark Sigils. Once the Mountaintop appears in your run, you can find the location to the north of the central castle. You cannot miss the Mountaintops since on Day 2, the Rain usually circles that area. Do note that for the Mountaintops to show up, you need to have defeated at least 2 Nightlords.

How To Best Use the Mountaintop Shifting Earth?

The Mountaintops are most effective against Dragon and Frost-type enemies. The boon you get from the Mountaintops essentially increases your Frost Resistance and also increases damage dealt to Dragons. As such, it’s a great option for two of the most challenging Nightlords in the game – Adel and Caligo. In fact, if you’re doing the Everdark Sovereign Expedition for the Gaping Jaw, the Mountaintop is highly recommended. The damage and defense bonus go a long way against Adel, especially when it comes to staggering the Nightlord. As a bonus, the boon received at the Mountaintops allows you to knock Adel out of its grab animation.

The same goes for Caligo. In fact, the Mountaintop’s boon is essentially a guaranteed way to defeat Caligo, even if you’re underleveled.
