The Deep of Night mode is easily the toughest challenge in Elden Ring Nightreign. The mode offers a robust endgame for players who have conquered Limveld multiple times. Apart from offering more challenging bosses, Deep of Night also adds more random elements to the game’s loot economy. Instead of a single passive perk, you now get access to two of those bonuses.

At the same time, the additional passive buffs are somewhat offset by a detrimental effect, which adds an additional layer of complexity to the Expeditions. Ideally, you want to tackle Deep of Night with a group of friends. However, we have had our fair share of successful Expeditions with randoms as well.

That said, some players might be wondering whether the new mode can be tackled solo or not. Well, you can technically go through a Deep of Night Expedition solo. However, there are some very good reasons why it’s better to team up for the new mode. Here’s everything you need to know about Deep of Night, and why it’s best to play it in co-op.

Yes, you can play the first couple of Depths of Deep of Night solo. For Depths 1 and 2, the difficulty is fairly standard and is comparable to that of the Everdark Sovereign Expeditions. However, for Depths 3-5, it’s better to team up with friends or random players. In Deep of Night, enemies have more HP and poise.

However, that’s not going to be the biggest issue for solo players. Instead, the biggest issue will be the Rune economy. In Deep of Night, most of the variables are randomized, including the Shifting Earth events. As such, you cannot plan a set route ahead of time. In solo mode, planning is one of the biggest advantages you can have during Expeditions.

Furthermore, in Depth 3 and above, most of the regular enemy encampments have multiple red-colored enemies. As such, you cannot just farm camps to get easy Runes. In addition to that, most of the POI bosses, i.e., the ones in the Castle, Great Churches, and Ruins, are often their red variants.

Suffice it to say, as a solo player, you will have very few avenues to get guaranteed Rune drops. And as such, you will not only run short of gaining Levels, but also won’t have enough to buy Wending Graces.

Solo Expeditions do retain their balancing (akin to regular Expeditions); however, not getting enough Runes can make things incredibly difficult. That said, solo mode does make for an incredibly good option for challenge runs.

Drawbacks of Playing Deep of Night in Solo Mode

Here are some drawbacks of playing Elden Ring Nightreign’s Deep of Night in solo mode:

  • Poor Rune economy in Depths 3 and above, which subsequently translates to lower power levels.
  • Less time to micromanage additional loot, i.e., Smithing Stones and Stonesword Keys.
  • Completing Shifting Earth and Central Castle can become a chore on Day 2. This is mostly due to the abundance of red-colored enemies and bosses.
  • Fewer opportunities to counteract detrimental debuffs.

While we do recommend playing Deep of Night in co-op, you can still play through it in solo mode. However, we highly recommend farming a few good Depth Relics and preparing a few loadouts beforehand. Furthermore, we also highly recommend setting up loadouts for multiple Nightfarers, ideally with different starting affinities.
