Everdark Sovereign Nightlords are easily the toughest encounters in the entirety of Elden Ring Nightreign, and the same goes for the newly released Everdark Fissure in the Fog. While the base moveset of Everdark Caligo, Miasma of Night, remains identical to its regular counterpart, there are a few key differences that make the former significantly more challenging.

For starters, Everdark Caligo can inflict Frostbite with almost all of its attacks, which not only deals a ton of damage but also staggers even the tankiest of Nightfarers. Furthermore, the Everdark version of Caligo relies heavily on AOE attacks, which are difficult to dodge and also deal damage over time.

That said, similar to the case of regular Caligo, the Everdark version of the boss can be trivialized with the use of Mountaintop Shifting Earth’s buff(s). However, is the Shifting Earth really necessary for the new Everdark Sovereign boss, or can you defeat Caligo without having to use the Mountaintop’s buffs? No, it is not mandatory, but it is recommended, and you can find out why in this article.

How Does the Mountaintop Shifting Earth Affect the Everdark Fissure in the Fog in Elden Ring Nightreign?

For those who aren’t aware, Mountaintop is one of the four Shifting Earth events in Elden Ring Nightreign. Shifting Earths are essentially this game’s take on the “Legacy Dungeons,” albeit with a twist. These locations are usually filled with higher-tier loot, including Legendary armaments. At the same time, Shifting Earth events are also home to some of the toughest bosses and enemies in the game and are usually tough to navigate for different reasons. For instance, the Crater Shifting Earth is an underground dungeon that features different levels with bosses. At the bottommost layer of the location, you will find the boss of the area, a Magma Wyrm.

Defeating the Magma Wyrm lets you upgrade one of your equipped weapons to Legendary, significantly increasing its damage output. In the same way, Mountaintop offers a very specific buff that not only strengthens your attack, but also your defenses. Basically, if you make your way to the peak of the Mountaintop, you can claim a buff that significantly increases Frost defense and also grants a buff to attack power upon nearby Frostbite.

Furthermore, on your way to the Mountaintop, you will always find a Flying Dragon, which you can kill to get the guaranteed Anti-Dragon attack buff. Also, if you defeat the Trolls and the Demi-Human Chief on the way to the Mountain, you can grab additional Frostbite Resistance. And given Caligo is a Dragon-type enemy that uses Frost as its primary means of dealing damage, the Mountaintop’s buff basically makes you invulnerable to most of the boss’s attacks.

Is the Mountaintop Buff Necessary for Everdark Fissure in the Fog?

Ideally, you want to make use of the Mountaintop Shifting Earth for this Nightlord. There’s no reason to not do so since you can easily summon any Shifting Earth event for your runs using the Sovereign Sigils. That said, the Mountaintop’s buff isn’t a mandatory requirement for Everdark Caligo. Even if you don’t have the Mountaintop Shifting Earth active for your run, you can still defeat Caligo fairly easily, granted you pick up powerful passives. Caligo is incredibly weak to Fire affinity damage. You can basically buff your Fire damage to easily take down the boss. Furthermore, Caligo’s attacks are very well-telegraphed and easy to read.
