Death has been at the heart of the Soulsborne games from the beginning and has played a crucial role in helping these games carve out their own space in gaming. The Soulsborne games expect you to embrace death as a part of the experience. But while this may be true, they also discourage you from being complacent by placing penalties for each death.

Although the genre of Elden Ring Nightreign is rogue-like, it holds on tight to the heart of the series. You die in this game a lot, notably due to the difficult enemies, bosses, and sometimes even the treacherous environments. In the words of the legendary Tony Todd, you can’t escape death and this is true for Nightreign. However, is there a penalty for something you can’t escape? Unfortunately, yes.

Elden Ring Nightreign, much like other Soulsborne games, has a penalty for death. In past games, you’d lose out on runes each time you died, slowing down your progress. Elden Ring Nightreign retains this aspect of death, while also adding another new penalty to go along with it. Read on to discover how death works in Elden Ring Nightreign and its associated penalties.

As stated earlier—yes, there is a penalty for dying in Elden Ring Nightreign. The first of these penalties is the loss of all the runes you’ve collected. Whenever you die, your rune count drops to zero, and the runes are then at the spot of your death. If you return to where you died, you can collect these runes, salvaging some of the progress lost upon death.

In addition to losing runes, Elden Ring Nightreign also adds a much harsher penalty in the form of a level deduction. You spend most of your run trying to level up as much as possible. But if you’re unlucky enough to die, the game will deduct your level by one. So, if you were Level 8 when you died, you will respawn at Level 7. This can be extremely punishing since a level can often be the difference between victory and defeat in boss fights.
