Elden Ring Nightreign is the start of a completely new chapter in terms of “game design” for FromSoftware. Instead of being a regular old single-player RPG, Nightreign is a multiplayer-focused title, with mild souls-like elements. While Nightreign does use Elden Ring as its base, it provides a completely different experience from the original game as well as the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. You do have the option to play the game as a single-player adventure. However, the game highly incentivizes multiplayer gaming, with most encounters being designed around two or more players. Unfortunately, as is the case with any multi-layer-focused title, Nightreign does suffer from occasional network and matchmaking-related errors.

Thankfully, there are a few ways to easily circumvent the network issues. Here’s everything you need to know about Elden Ring Nightreign’s network and matchmaking errors as well as the possible fixes to try.

For the most part, Elden Ring Nightreign’s online systems are a significant upgrade over the original game and even past FromSoftware titles. The netcode is also quite good, with very few instances of lag spikes. However, the game does suffer from occasional network disconnects, which forces you to go back to the main menu. The errors mostly pop up while trying to matchmake in an open lobby with specific conditions. For instance, if you try to matchmake for a specific number of bosses, the game has a tendency to disconnect. This is probably due to the game’s servers being overloaded on release, which is a common thing for most multiplayer games.

Another major reason for this might have to do with how the game queues matchmaking requests. If you try to matchmake with a password, it usually never disconnects. However, doing so restricts you to a closed lobby, which isn’t ideal unless you have a group of friends to play with. You can, however, cheat this system to get past the network-related errors in the game, albeit with some caveats.

Here are the possible fixes you can try for the network and matchmaking errors:

Use the Password System

You can essentially use the password system to “cheat” the game’s matchmaking. Essentially, if you have another player to play with, set a password and make the lobby for Two Players (the default is Three Players). After that, simply select the bosses you want to fight and commence the Expedition. This will force the game to queue you and your friend for matchmaking, and it will pull another online player to complete your squad. We have found this method to be the most reliable way to overcome the network-related errors in Nightreign. Do note that if you have two other friends to play with, set the lobby back to Three Players before heading out for an Expedition.

Complete a Single-Player Expedition

For some reason, completing a single-player Expedition helps solve the matchmaking issue in Nightreign. We at Deltia’s Gaming had this happen twice, where we weren’t able to connect with other players online until we launched a solo Expedition and came back from it. You don’t necessarily have to complete the solo Expeditions. Instead, you can just launch it, preferably survive the first day, and then die to get the tier-2 Relics and Murk. After that, head back to the Roundtable, and you should be able to use the multiplayer modes once again. Our theory is that this is a bug that should get addressed in the game’s first few title updates.

Restart the Game

Lastly, you can always try to restart the game and try to log back in again. We have had a few times where restarting Nightreign allowed us to get back into the multiplayer without any major issues. Also, make sure to keep an eye out for Elden Ring and FromSoftware’s socials for updates on server maintenance and downtimes.
