After five years of the Apple vs Epic court battle, the Supreme Court ruled that Apple must allow an alternative payment system. Epic used this opportunity to announce that users will receive 20% rewards for every in-game purchase via the Epic Games Store if they use Epic’s payment system instead of Apple’s. Therefore, if you play many games from the Epic Games Store like Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys, and more, you can now attain 20% rewards for every purchase you make. All you need to do is use Epic’s own payment system instead of utilizing the device’s built-in store, like Apple’s App Store or Google Play Store.

In this article, we will explain what it means for an average consumer and what more they can expect as the Epic vs Apple battle continues.

Epic Games Wants You To Use Its Payment System Instead of Apple’s

The Epic Games Store is where you can get games like Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys, and more. It is a one-stop shop for multiple platforms, including Windows, iOS, and Android. However, each platform has its own store, which takes a 15 – 30% cut for every purchase. This is exactly what prompted the Epic vs Apple battle, which started back in 2020. Recently, the Supreme Court granted a ruling in favor of Epic and other third parties. According to that ruling, Apple must allow third-party apps and stores to have their own payment system.

However, the users can decide whether they want to use Apple’s or Epic’s payment system. Epic has announced that if you choose the latter, you will receive 20% back in the form of Epic Rewards from every purchase you make. Epic’s reward system is probably a way of incentivizing users to choose their payment system.

Since the Epic Games Store is universally available for multiple platforms, including mobiles, this reward system will apply to all platforms.

Epic vs Apple: The Battle Continues

According to the latest ruling, Epic and other developers can submit their apps to the App Store with an alternative payment system without paying commission to Apple. However, the Cupertino giant holds the right to reject the application, and knowing Apple, the company probably will. No one can tell when you can expect Fortnite to show up on the App Store, but if you can’t wait, you can download the game right now from Epic Games Store.

While core aspects of the Epic vs Apple legal battle have concluded, the battle still continues, and Apple could choose to appeal the ruling.
