Discover how you can play as Switzerland in Europa Universalis 5 (EU5) by joining the Swiss Confederation and completing Swiss Unification.
Switzerland is a Tier II Formable Country in Europa Universalis 5, which can originate from the Swiss Confederation or Eidgenossenschaft. The members of the international organization (IO) come together to form a union to defend themselves against the growing power of von Habsburg. To actually play as Switzerland in EU5, you must be a part of the Swiss Confederation IO and successfully vote on the Swiss Unification law. However, there are certain conditions that need to be met before that becomes possible.

How To Join the Swiss Confederation in Europa Universalis 5
Around 1337, the starting date of EU5, the definition of a Swiss country has not yet been determined. The Swiss Confederation already exists, with its five initial members including the Free City of Bern, the Canton of Schwyz, the Canton of Lucerne, the Canton of Obwalden, and the Canton of Uri.
However, other nearby countries with a similar primary culture or language groups can also join the Swiss Confederation IO through invitation or request. You can either start as one of the nations within the confederation or a nearby Swiss country.
We recommend starting as the Free City of Zürich and requesting membership of the Swiss Confederation. To do so, select the Swiss Confederation to open its menu. Then, click on the question mark on the right side of the Members tab. They will accept your request because they want the international organization to grow, especially to safeguard against the regionally dominant Austria.

How To Achieve Swiss Unification
To unlock and propose the Swiss Unification law, the following conditions must be met to trigger “The Swiss Movement for Unification” event:
- The Swiss Confederation IO must be at peace or in defensive war.
- The Swiss Confederation IO must have a combined population of more than 350,000.
It will take a few decades to meet these requirements as the Black Death wipes out a sizable fraction of each country’s population. Once you meet the requirements, you or another member nation can call a vote on Swiss Unification to choose from three policies:
- Found the Swiss Republic
- Found the Swiss Monarchy
- Found the Swiss Theocracy
After a successful vote, the Swiss Confederation IO is disbanded, and all of its members unify into a single country: Switzerland.
