In Europa Universalis 5, an empire is only as strong as its leader, and the leader is only strong so long as they hold control. Control is one of the most important traits when playing Europa Universalis 5, and is a direct representation of the power you wield.

The more control you have over an empire, the more they’ll bend to your will. This control translates directly into the taxes sections of your empire pay, your crown power, conversion speed, and so much more. All of this means that increasing control goes from a mere loading screen suggestion to an integral part of your gameplay.

If you’re just diving into Europa Universalis 5, you need to master your control over your empire and increase it. If you don’t know how to increase control in the game, our guide is here to help.

Your Control over a section of your empire depends on how far the location is from your capital. The closer the location is to your capital, the greater control you have over that area. Apart from the closeness to your capital, your proximity plays a role too.

Proximity and closeness are the same, you might believe, and in a way, they are. But proximity is a measure of how easy it is to travel to a specific location in your empire. If there’s a direct road leading to an area, you’ll consider it to be in close proximity, regardless of distance. The closer an area is in proximity to you, the greater control you have over it.

How To Increase Control in Europa Universalis 5

Now that we know proximity ties into the control we have on any area, we’re going to put this knowledge to use to increase control. You can increase the proximity first by building roads across the map. Try to make direct roads to each and every area in your empire. This will reduce the proximity costs, improve proximity, and increase your control over said area.

If the area is on the other side of the sea, a road will not work. You then have to build a harbor, increase your harbor capacity, and boost maritime presence to improve proximity and increase control.

If you’ve just captured an area, you should send your army right away. This will help increase control in the newly captured area. If the area is old and you’ve met all of the aforementioned conditions, you can also develop the land to increase control.
