Learn every fish in 99 Nights in the Forest with the Fishing Update, pond locations, values, and bonus items you can catch.
With the latest update, 99 Nights in the Forest introduces fishing as a new gameplay mechanic, allowing players to gather food and even 4 event-exclusive badges. There are 8 fish you can catch and cook, which makes surviving a lot easier and more fun, but you first need a fishing rod, which can be obtained from the Pelt Trader or found in the Fishing Shack (new location). There is also a new class, The Fisherman, that begins with a fishing rod by default, and it costs 50 diamonds to unlock, which is quite cheap if you compare it with other utility-based classes.
As you fish and gain XP, you can upgrade your rod from old to good to strong, making it easier to catch rarer fish. In this guide, we will cover all the fish that you can catch, all the pond locations, and other items you can reel in.
How Fishing Works in 99 Nights in the Forest
- Obtain the Old Rod from the Pelt Trader or Fishing Shack.
- Upgrade your rod by gaining fishing XP and visiting the Fishing Shack crafting table.
- Better rods = higher chances of catching rare fish.
- Limited-time event (August 15–22, 2025) offers 4 exclusive fishing badges.

- Fresh Pond:
- Requirement: Campfire level 1–4.
- Contains: Mackerel, Salmon, Clownfish.
- Algal Pond:
- Requirement: Campfire level 4–5.
- Contains: Salmon, Clownfish, Swordfish.
- Bone Pond:
- Requirement: Campfire level 6.
- Contains: Swordfish, Jellyfish, Sharks.
- Cold Pond:
- Location: Cold Hut.
- Contains: Char, Eel.
