Video games are supposed to introduce you to a new fictional world. But here are some games that are exceptionally good at bending reality.

We all play video games to step away from reality, and many would agree that they are a form of art. However, nothing can be termed as a “perfect game” as it all ultimately depends on an individual’s expectations, biases, and subjective taste.
However, if you like concepts, stories, or gameplay that challenge your perception of reality, some games may be suited for you better than others.
Reality-Bending Games To Try
The video game industry is several years old now. We have received a lot of impressive games since then, which might come under the “reality-bending” genre. Unfortunately, the list today will only consist of five games. Kindly note that the said list is subject to the writer’s opinions and is not ranked in any way. With that said, try the following games if you like games that challenge your perception of reality:
- Alan Wake 2
- Portal
- Doki Doki Literature Club Plus
- Call of Duty: Black Ops
- Superhot
1. Alan Wake 2

Remedy Entertainment does not lag behind when it comes to reality-bending games. The studio is popular for creating concepts and stories that will make you question everything in the fictional world you are experiencing. Alan Wake 2 is the much-awaited sequel to the 2010 title called Alan Wake. The latter ended with the protagonist, Alan Wake, getting stuck in the “Dark Place” that lurks inside Cauldron Lake.
Even though he is unable to escape the Dark Place, the second game shows that he is still trying to get out after all these years. He is living in an alternate reality and trying to find an escape, only to die at the end, and wake up with no memory of his past run. When each run starts similarly, it will start playing with the minds of all players.
2. Portal

Back in 2007, Valve released a game called Portal, which did something new in the gaming industry. The concept of Portals was not new to people back then. It was pretty popular among sci-fi lovers. However, it had never been inculcated into a game so well before. Portal 2 expanded on this feature and included a co-op as well. Since Portal was the first game to bring this reality-bending concept to life, we decided to put it on the list. There was no fluff or combat to worry about, just mind-boggling puzzles that you had to solve using portals.
3. Doki Doki Literature Club Plus

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus is not at all what you might think. It is an extension of the 2017 game of the same name. The developer re-released the game and added the “plus” to mark the new edition. Gamers playing the Plus edition will have access to additional side missions. The title suggests that the game might have something to do with literature. In reality, it is a dating sim. But, it breaks that reality eventually as you are playing the game, and the story takes a darker turn.
4. Call of Duty: Black Ops

When the Call of Duty franchise first came up with the Black Ops series, the world didn’t know what to expect. Everybody thought it was just our regular first-person shooter experience. Little did we know that the game was going to be a psychological thriller.
Players get in the shoes of Alex Mason, a CIA operative. He falls prey to a science experiment that makes him relive certain moments from his life and hallucinates a key character who is later revealed to be a fragment of his imagination. The point of discovery makes you realise how you were perceiving the game’s reality wrong the entire time. If you have played it, you already know why the game is on the list.
5. Superhot

If you think you know how slow-mo can work inside a game, Superhot will make you rethink everything. The game is a first-person shooter at heart. It has some twists, though. For example, you have reality-bending powers in the game. This power allows you to slow down time whenever you are not moving. Not only does this alter how you perceive time-slow in video games, but the story is also pretty interesting with a unique ending that you may not expect at all.
