Grounded 2 has finally been released in early access, bringing many new features alongside the familiar gameplay mechanics. The game successfully preserves what it is known for while expanding on it. Although there are many similarities, the features vary enough to encourage trying out the sequel.

To help you understand some of these, here are five major differences between Grounded 1 and Grounded 2.

1. Rideable Bugs in Grounded 2

The first major difference is that you can now ride tamed insects called Buggies. This was a top player request for the first game, but was not implemented. Now, you can collect insect eggs from nests and hatcheries to incubate and tame them as mounts.

Your Buggy not only assists in movement but also helps collect resources more quickly. Additionally, they can engage in combat with hostile bugs to assist you. Currently, only two Buggies are available, with more planned for future updates.

2. Map Size

Wendell’s Backyard in Grounded 1 is large, but Brookhollow Park, the map in the sequel, is even larger. Only part of the map is revealed so far, but the unexplored areas suggest that Brookhollow Park is over twice the size of Wendell’s Backyard. This indicates more biomes and a much more extensive adventure than in the first game.

The first map expansion is going to be released in Winter 2025, which will also add many new exciting features, like creatures, improvements, and the Ladybug Buggy.

3. Omni-Tools

Omni-Tools is a new feature in Grounded 2 that replaces the need for crafting separate tools like axes, hammers, and shovels, as in the first game. The Omni-Tool does not occupy inventory space, allowing you to focus on crafting key weapons and consumables and keeping them on your hotbar.

Currently, Omni-Tools can be upgraded only to Tier 2, but the UI indicates they can reach up to Tier 5. This suggests future updates will introduce more challenging locations and stronger bugs.

4. New Combat System

With the addition of classes, you can now choose a combat style that suits you best. In Grounded 1, players could feel overwhelmed by the variety of weapons and armor, but the sequel lets you select a class and develop it throughout the game. A new dodge mechanic enables you to dash out of danger at the cost of stamina.

The Grounded 2 roadmap shows that future updates will add new weapons, armor, and classes. Hence, the combat system will evolve significantly. Specifically, the Fall Update in 2025 is going to introduce a creature called AXL. The roadmap shows you can make armor and weapons out of AXL parts, which indicates this creature is going to be a major boss.

5. More Bugs

Although still in early access, Grounded 2 already features many new bug types, mostly large, dangerous insects such as Mantis, Cockroaches, and Scorpions. Grounded 1 lacked such enemy variety and threats outside of boss fights. More dangerous bugs make the game more exciting and improve combat challenges.

This concludes our overview of the five main differences between Grounded 1 and Grounded 2.
