The Masked Stranger is a mysterious teen whose identity remains unknown in Grounded 2. Here’s how to defeat them in Act 1.
Grounded 2 early access is currently playable up to the end of Act 1, which concludes at the Statue Lab. In the lab, you have to fight the character called the Masked Stranger, who is an unknown shrunken teen like the main characters. Additionally, they know about your endeavors in Tully’s Backyard, which is the map of Grounded 1. This boss fight further proves that the Masked Stranger is the unknown fifth teen from the prequel.
To help you out, here’s how you can defeat the Masked Stranger boss in Grounded 2.

Overview of the Masked Stranger in Grounded 2
The Masked Stranger wears purple armor from an unknown bug and wields a Coaltana that inflicts Sizzle damage when hit. The fight consists of three phases, with the Masked Stranger battling alone in Phases 1 and 2. During Phase 3, they spawn an O.R.C. Wolf Spider named Bandit. Bandit deals slightly more damage because of being an O.R.C. enemy, but has the same health.
Recommended Gear Against the Masked Stranger in Grounded 2
Here is what your loadout should look like before starting the boss fight. Note that you can save before the fight to try a different loadout if the one mentioned below isn’t working out for you.
- Armor: Full Snail or Roach Armor Set
- Main Weapon: Mantis Blade or Roach Club
- Trinket: Volatile Capacitor
- Mutations:
- Blademaster, if you are using Mantis Blade, or Smasher, if you are using Roach Club
- Parry Master
- Fresh Defense
- Mithritadism, if you have the fourth Mutation slot unlocked
- Lots of bandages and a couple of Scorpidotes to deal with Bandit.
Now that you have the perfect loadout, here’s how to win the boss fight.
Tips To Easily Defeat Masked Stranger in Grounded 2
Phase 1
- The boss constantly attacks with their Coaltana, which deals Sizzle damage. You need to perfect block most attacks to avoid Sizzle buildup.
- The thrust attack breaks normal block, which stuns you for a bit. Avoid being constantly in a blocked state to avoid being stunned.
- If you block perfectly a few times, the Masked Stranger gets stunned for much longer, which is the best time to deal large amounts of damage.
- Dash out of the way during spin and chain attacks. Those are hard to perfect block.
- You can break their block with a charged attack, which helps build up stun.
Once the Masked Stranger’s health drops to 30%-40%, they heal completely with a smoothie and enter the second phase.
Phase 2
- The Masked Stranger has the same moveset as before, but with a few additional attacks. Note that the attack speed and frequency are much higher in this phase.
- The main attack of this phase is a large telegraphed AoE (Area of Effect) attack. This move takes a second to charge up, so dash or jump backwards to avoid getting hit. Additionally, this move does a lot of damage, so do not attempt to tank it.
- Constantly spam heal and block attacks to get through this phase.
The Masked Stranger backs off once their health drops to 30%-40% and spawns Bandit.

Phase 3
- Bandit spawns in the middle of the room, and you should use one of the Scorpidotes immediately to mitigate some Venom buildup.
- Wolf Spiders in Grounded 2 are more vicious than before. They have quick and unpredictable attack patterns that are hard to perfectly block.
- Watch out for the main pounce attack, and deal damage when the spider isn’t attacking.
- You can break Bandit’s block, which temporarily stuns it.
Once you eliminate the Bandit, the Masked Stranger departs, mentioning plans to visit Dr. Wendell Tully. However, his location is still unknown to you. You can now proceed to the final room to gather your loot and exit the lab.
