Let’s take a look at the theory of Jason being an undercover cop in GTA 6 and explore the clues and possibilities about this idea.

With the second trailer for GTA 6 finally out, fans have more material to fuel their theories, one of which is that Jason might actually be an undercover cop. If this is the case, it would represent a huge turn in the game’s narrative. There hasn’t been a main character in the Grand Theft Auto franchise who is actively working as a police officer.
However, some would argue that this theory is problematic for the game’s story and gameplay. This article will take a look at the theory about Jason being an undercover cop in GTA 6.

The Origin of the Jason Duval Undercover Cop Theory in GTA 6
The theory started when the X user GTA 6 Countdown shared a post back on December 8, 2023, explaining Jason’s clothing in one of the promotional arts for the game. According to him, there are various clues that lead to the possibility of him spending some time in the military or as a police enforcer.
“Jason is left-handed, has a buzz haircut, and wears his watch on the inside, supporting the theory of him being ex-military or an undercover cop.”
This theory spread to other discussion boards like Reddit, where players argued about how likely this theory is to be true. It was not until the second trailer that the speculations ran wild. User GamerDetective posted an image, claiming that “Jason Duval is definitely a cop.”

The Problem With the GTA 6 Jason Duval Undercover Cop Theory
While the theory has garnered significant attention, not all fans are convinced. Some argue that the similarities in attire could be coincidental or a result of shared fashion trends within the game’s setting.
Others believe that introducing an undercover cop as a protagonist might be a clichéd narrative choice, preferring a storyline that focuses on genuine criminal endeavors without hidden identities.
Reddit user Hellraiser1123 shared a post on how playing as a cop would not go well for a Grand Theft Auto title:
“No. I can’t think of anything worse than playing GTA as a cop. I know that free roam stuff isn’t canon, but it wouldn’t make any sense for an active police officer to be going on rocket launcher rampages or leading 200mph chases. It’s also a really cliche plot twist.”
Given that the Grand Theft Auto series centers around criminal activity, making a cop the protagonist presents some challenges. It could feel jarring or break immersion if you’re gunning down civilians while playing as a law enforcement officer. This would clash with Jason’s presumed moral code and backstory. Unless Rockstar leans into portraying him as a corrupt or disillusioned cop. Even so, undercover officers generally don’t have the freedom to go on killing sprees.
To add to that, you really can’t expect a Grand Theft Auto game not to have a few hours of gameplay without a shootout and killing people. If Jason happens to be fighting other cops, will he be allowed to kill them?

More Plausible Theories
Jason is an ex-cop

If we really have to fit in the cop or military narrative for Jason, there is a way to make it happen. One plausible angle is that he’s an ex-cop. This can be a good explanation as to why he seems hesitant about Lucia’s decisions in the trailers.
Lucia appears to be the one calling the shots, while Jason seems to follow her lead, possibly out of loyalty, necessity, or even guilt. If he does have a background in law enforcement or the military, it could mean he’s more familiar with structure and discipline, making him less inclined to embrace chaotic or reckless plans.

Jason Is Working With the Police

We’ve seen this many times in the GTA series where the main character is being blackmailed into doing dirty work for corrupt cops. One possible theory is that Jason is working with law enforcement to possibly infiltrate the criminal side of Vice City.
This narrative can even be used to create conflict between him and Lucia. Jason could be forced to choose to give up Lucia for immunity or a reduced sentence. This can lead to two possible endings where he betrays her partner or sticks with her till the end.
