Hell Is Us features an in-depth combat system, akin to a traditional souls-like RPG. While the game isn’t technically an action RPG, as its trailers might suggest, it still offers a compelling combat system. Furthermore, the game also features a good variety of weapon types. And much like in a traditional action RPG, each weapon type has its advantages and disadvantages. While all the weapon types in the game are equally capable against the Hollow Walkers, they do offer vastly different playstyles. In addition to that, weapon abilities (skills) also vary depending on the weapon you choose to wield.

All Weapon Types in Hell Is Us
In Hell Is Us, there are a total of 4 weapon types – Greatswords, Dual Axes, One-handed Swords, and Polearms (Glaives). Each of these weapons has vastly different combat animations tied to them. Furthermore, depending on the weapon you choose, the skill activation animation also varies. For instance, if you have equipped a Rage skill on the One-handed Sword, its activation animation is going to differ quite a lot from the same skill on a Greatsword. However, you can upgrade all these weapon types into any elemental form. There’s no limitation to the elemental upgrades for weapons.
However, do note that some weapons work better with specific elemental affinities. For example, Greatswords are best paired with Rage or Ecstasy, due to the bonus DPS. Whereas, Dual Axes are best paired with Rage or Grief, for increased agility and DPS. Here’s a breakdown of the 4 weapon types in Hell Is Us:
- Greatsword: The Greatsword is an incredibly powerful weapon type, which excels at dishing out high damage with single hits. The weapon’s combos extend to only 3 hits. However, its first hit is almost as effective as the combo finisher of most weapon types. The only downside of using a Greatsword is its low agility.
- Dual Axes: Dual Axes are an excellent weapon if you’re looking to add agility to your playstyle. These weapons don’t deal much damage in single hits, but can easily stack damage via 5-hit combos.
- One-handed Sword: One-handed Sword offers a hybrid solution between the Greatsword and Dual Axes. While it’s not as agile as the Dual Axes, it does deal more damage. Additionally, One-handed Swords offer the best elemental scaling in Hell Is Us.
- Polearm: Polearms are similar to One-handed Swords, albeit with a slower combo. Polearms are best paired with Grief, which increases their agility, making them capable of dishing out very high DPS at low Stamina cost.

How To Unlock All Weapon Types in Hell Is Us
Weapons in Hell Is Us are unlocked automatically upon completing story quests. However, you can also get certain weapons as a reward for completing Good Deeds and Timeloops. If you’re thorough with your exploration, you can unlock all weapon types before the end of Act 1.
