While the game isn’t technically an action RPG, as its trailers might suggest, it still offers a compelling combat system. The game also features a variety of weapon types, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. While all weapons are equally capable against the Hollow Walkers, they provide vastly different playstyles. In addition, weapon abilities (skills) vary depending on the weapon you wield.

In Hell Is Us, there are four weapons: Greatswords, Dual Axes, One-handed Swords, and Polearms (Glaives). Each of these weapons has unique combat animations. Depending on the weapon, the skill activation animation also changes. For instance, if you equip a Rage skill on the One-handed Sword, its activation animation will differ from the same skill on a Greatsword. However, all weapons can be upgraded into any elemental form, with no limitations on elemental upgrades.

That said, certain weapons work better with specific elemental affinities. For example, Greatswords pair best with Rage or Ecstasy due to their bonus DPS, while Dual Axes are best suited for Rage or Grief to boost agility and DPS. Here’s a breakdown of the four weapon types in Hell Is Us:

  • Greatsword: The Greatsword is a powerful weapon that excels at dealing massive damage with single hits. Its combos extend to only three strikes, but the first hit is almost as strong as the combo finisher of most weapons. The trade-off is low agility.
  • Dual Axes: Dual Axes are an excellent weapon if you’re looking to add agility to your playstyle. These weapons don’t deal much damage in single hits, but can easily stack damage via 5-hit combos.
  • One-handed Sword: The One-handed Sword offers a hybrid solution between the Greatsword and Dual Axes. While it’s not as agile as the Dual Axes, it does deal more damage. Additionally, One-handed Swords offer the best elemental scaling in Hell Is Us.
  • Polearm: Polearms are similar to One-handed Swords, albeit with a slower combo. They work best when paired with Grief, which increases their agility, making them capable of dishing out very high DPS at low Stamina cost.
