Discover the controversial collab between Helldiver 2 and Killzone 2 and how the studio responded to the community’s backlash.
Helldivers 2 released its first-ever collaboration with Killzone 2, introducing new weapons, armor, premium cosmetics, and much more. However, the collab was instantly bombarded with criticism by the fans. Here’s how the controversy unfolded.
Reasons for Outrage
The premium Helghast-inspired Killzone content arrived in the shop with two separate bundles rather than combined in a warbond. A warbond usually costs 1,000 supercredits, which is $10, whereas the Killzone cosmetics amount to 1,950 supercredits, roughly $20 for a single bundle. The first bundle consists of an assault rifle, armor, a helmet, a cape, a player card, and an infantry title. They were previously available in the superstore until December 23, 2024.
Fans criticized Arrowhead Studios because of the high prices of the bundles and the limited availability of only five days.
Studio Responds
After facing a lot of backlash on the pricing and availability of the premium content, Arrowhead Studios responded with an apology and announced that the second bundle of the Killzone content would be free.
The developers wrote this in a blog post:
“Firstly, we are gifting to everyone the planned second wave of Helldivers x Killzone Collaboration items today, free of charge. The distribution of those items will begin shortly, in two waves.”
“As such we’re also going to extend the duration of the items currently in the Superstore from 5 days to 10 days so that you have a chance to get hold of it and reduce the risk of missing out.”
Rewards
The free content given to players includes the second Killzone bundle, which consists of:
- PLAS-39 Accelerator Rifle: A high-precision burst-fire plasma rifle that must be charged to fire
- StA-11 SMG: A submachine gun with a helical-feed magazine, which gives the weapon a higher ammo capacity while making it more front-heavy.
- AC-2 Obedient Armor Set: The helmet is equipped with heptafocal specialty lenses, making it a favorite among long-distance snipers and micro-sculpture enthusiasts alike. The armor has a passive that provides 50% resistance to fire, gas, acid, and electrical damage.
- Defender of Our Dream Cape
- Defender of Our Dream Player Card
Limited Time Content
Currently, the first Killzone bundle is available in the superstore until December 28, 2024. The stock of the superstore will rotate, and the bundle will be unavailable after this date. Players can grind supercredits in the game or use real money to buy the bundle. The content includes:
- StA-52 Assault Rifle: An assault rifle with a high-capacity drum magazine, good for providing sustained fire. The weapon costs 615 supercredits.
- AC-1 Dutiful Amor Set: The breathing apparatus built into this armor helps both soldiers and colonists thrive, even when assigned to planets with atmospheres rated “superoptimal,” “extreme,” and “character building.” The armor costs 500 supercredits, and the helmet costs 310 supercredits.
- Strength in Our Arms Cape: The symbol on this cape represents the pillars of freedom, duty, obedience, and loyalty. The cape costs 310 supercredits.
- Strength in Our Arms Player Card: The cost of the player card is 90 supercredits.
- Assault Infantry Title: The title costs 150 supercredits.
The Helldivers 2 x Killzone 2 collaboration had a rough start with its controversial pricing, but the developers’ willingness to listen and address the community shows their dedication to the players. The decision to offer free content has been well-received by the community.
Players look forward to more exciting content and updates as the collaboration continues to unfold.
