Crests in Hollow Knight Silksong work similarly to the Charms system in the original game. However, this gameplay mechanic introduces something new that sets it apart from the previous system. It alters your playstyle depending on your selection and later expands to give you more combat options.

Expanding your Crests is pretty straightforward, but it can take time and patience. On top of that, you need to plan ahead for the playstyle you prefer. To help you out, here is a Crest guide for Hollow Knight Silksong.

List of All Crests in Hollow Knight Silksong

There are seven crests that you can get in Hollow Knight Silksong:

Slots In Each Crest in Hollow Knight Silksong

Each of these Crests has several “slots” in them. However, not all slots are unlocked from the beginning. You will have to progress through the game and find the relevant items to unlock more slots. That said, each slot can be one of four types, with its own color code:

  • Red is focused on combat and weapons.
  • Blue is for defensive options.
  • Yellow helps in exploration.
  • White is focused on your Skills.

Knowing the effects of each slot is important. Unlocking them blindly will leave you with an inefficient setup.

The Witch Crest is a bit more difficult to get in Hollow Knight Silksong, and you will eventually have to rely on Yarnaby. To start the process, you need to find Greyroot and complete the Rite of the Pollip wish. After multiple stages, this character will betray you, sending you on a new quest to cure yourself. You will eventually need to find Yarnaby, who can be found in the exact spot as shown in the image above.

Once you complete Yarnaby’s quest, the bug will perform an operation on you, after which you will finally get the Witch Crest in Hollow Knight Silksong. The Witch Crest also has three slots unlocked by default – one red and two blue.

Here is how Hornet performs with the Witch Crest in Silksong:

  • Normal attack: Hornet uses her needle to do a heavy forward slash.
  • Upward attack: Hornet performs a quicker slash above her.
  • Downward attack: Very fast diagonal downward strikes.
  • Dash attack: Attacks in the direction of sprint with a wide arc.

Once you have achieved this feat, head to the location show in the map above to reach the Chapel of the Beast. Complete the gauntlet challenge here as well, and you will be able to claim it easily. The Beast Crest has only default tool slots, and both of these are red colored.

Beast Crest has the following effects on Hornet:

  • Normal attack: Hornet uses her claws to strike.
  • Upward attack: Hornet performs an upward slash with her claws.

You will unlock the Architect Crest during the late-game stages of Hollow Knight Silksong, and it is tied to the Twelfth Architect NPC in Underworks. The location to this NPC is marked in the map above, and there is a really elaborate method to get it.

Once you reach the Chapel of the Architect, you can directly claim the Architect Crest. Unlike other crests, you do not need to complete a fighting challenge for this one. The Architect Crest has three tool slots available by default, and all of them are red colored.

Here is how Hornet’s moveset is affected if you equip the Architect Crest in Hollow Knight Silksong:

  • Normal attack: Hornet’s needle spins like a drill while attacking.
  • Upward attack: Hornet performs an upward slash with needle-drill.
  • Downward attack: Diagonal drill-strikes.
  • Dash attack: Attacks in the direction of sprint with the needle-drill.
  • Bind properties: Consumes 9 Silk to heal 3 masks. Also uses Shards to recover any Tools that you might have used.

You can refer to our Architect Crest guide for a detailed explanation on the Twelfth Architect’s tasks.

Shaman

Currently, we do not have the information on how you can actually get the Shaman. That said, here is how it affects the basic moves of Hornet:

  • Normal attack: Hornet’s needle sends out waves in front to deal short-ranged damage as well.
  • Upward attack: Hornet performs an upward slash with that also sends out waves.
  • Downward attack: Slashes downwards that creates waves once again.
  • Dash attack: Attacks in the direction of sprint with the needle, throws a wave forward.
  • Bind properties: Consumes 9 Silk to heal 3 masks. Also strikes downward piercing anything in its path. This is also related to the Void powers from Hollow Knight.

We will update this section with more details once we find them.

You get a Crest at the start of Hollow Knight Silksong, but with limited slots. You will need to acquire a Memory Locket to unlock more slots and expand your options. These items can be found by playing the game and discovering secret areas. Alternatively, you can also find Memory Lockets in various shops or as quest rewards.

For example, completing the Volatile Flintbeetles will reward you with one locket. It’s a pretty straightforward quest, so it’s a good way to unlock your early Crest slot. You’ll need to visit a Bench to check your Memory Locket and use it. Pull up your Crest menu and check the small dots to start unlocking slots.
