Monster Hunter World is perhaps one of the most content-rich RPGs out there. The base game alone can last you more than 100-200 hours with the content it offers. Monster Hunter games, despite featuring a rather short main campaign, are some of the longest RPGs out there, in terms of content and overall playtime.

That is also the case with Monster Hunter World. If you beeline just the main story quests, the game is hardly longer than a traditional action-adventure game. However, unlike other RPGs, Monster Hunter’s main progression expands far beyond just its main campaign. In fact, the actual meat and potatoes, i.e., the endgame, of a mainline Monster Hunter game is revealed only after you’ve completed the main campaign.

Here’s everything you need to know about Monster Hunter World’s completion time. This article covers completion times for both the base game and the Iceborne expansion. Furthermore, there are mild story spoilers for Monster Hunter World and Iceborne.

How Long Is Monster Hunter World’s Base Game?

The base game of Monster Hunter World takes roughly 30-40 hours to go through. However, that’s just for the main campaign. Once you’re done with the main campaign’s quests, you’ll get access to additional High Rank quests, including new monsters like Lunastra, and Tempered variants of the Elder Dragons. Furthermore, there are also Low and High Rank Event quests.

The Event quests were once part of the game’s post-launch roadmap. During the game’s post-launch cycle, these quests used to rotate weekly, giving players an incentive to return to the game even if they had completed the main campaign. However, once the game’s final title update went live, all the Event quests were made available to players, permanently.

As such, to complete a specific Event quest, you won’t have to wait for a weekly rotation. The Event quests alone can take upwards of 100 hours to complete. Furthermore, there are also Siege quests, i.e., the Kulve Taroth quest. All these quests add roughly 100-200 hours more of playtime.

Additionally, if you factor in the time it will take to grind for the best end-game gear, you are looking at roughly 500 hours of playtime, if not more. This is just for the base game. Now, if you want to get the Platinum Trophy for the base game, it will take somewhere around 400-450 hours.

An average playthrough of the base game content of Monster Hunter World, including the main campaign, Event quests, and optional hunts, takes roughly 150-200 hours. However, if you want to get into the nitty-gritty of the Monster Hunter World experience, it will easily take you upwards of 400 hours.

Monster Hunter World’s Iceborne expansion essentially adds almost an entire game’s worth of content. In fact, Iceborne’s endgame comprises content that far surpasses that of the base game, both in terms of length and scope. The main campaign of Iceborne takes roughly 25-30 hours to complete, depending on your gear.

However, the 30-hour mark is only a rough estimate for the main campaign. Iceborne marks a significant increase in difficulty via its Master Rank quests. As such, progression in Iceborne is very much dependent on your skill, experience, and build. While the campaign is fairly easy, compared to the endgame content, it can still be quite challenging if you’re not well-prepared for the hunts.

Much like the base game, Iceborne also features its fair share of additional content in the form of Event quests, Sieges, and Special Assignments. If you plan to get the Platinum Trophy for Iceborne, i.e., 100% it, you’re looking at north of 500 hours, at minimum.

Iceborne’s endgame also features the Guiding Lands, which unlock right after you defeat Shara Ishvalda. The Guiding Lands, much like the base game’s endgame, unlock new monsters (Zinogre, Rajang, Yian Garuga, etc.) for you to hunt. Furthermore, the Guiding Lands also features what can be summarised as the true ending of Iceborne, the confrontation against Ruiner Nergigante.

The Guiding Lands is essentially an open-world-like section. It’s an endless Expedition, where you can hunt monsters across all biomes without any carting limit. Since Guinding Lands’ progression is basically RNG-based, it’s endlessly replayable.
