Chainsaw Man is different from other shonen series. It is full of brutal violence, unpredictable storytelling, and different interpretations of devils. In this chaotic world, we have been introduced to the War Devil, who is one of the strongest devils. They embody the fundamental aspect of human fear. Yoru, the War Devil, has made a contract with Asa and is now a war fiend. She takes center stage as an important character who could potentially be a strong rival to Chainsaw Man himself.

This article delves into the War Devil’s origins, abilities, and role within the narrative. It explores the true extent of its power and its impact on the story.

The War Devil’s Origins and Purpose

The War Devil is one of the oldest devils who has existed since the concept of war emerged. She, along with her three sisters—Control, Famine, and Death—formed a group called the Four Horsemen. They fought against Chainsaw Man. This fight resulted in the sisters being gravely injured. Chainsaw Man ate their body parts, which had a direct effect on the world, making people considerably less scared of war.

This took place somewhere around World War II, and after receiving life-threatening injuries, they parted ways and went into hiding. As the War Devil embodies humanity’s fear of war, its purpose is to spread fear about it, as she will grow stronger based on how feared war is.

In Chainsaw Man Part 2, Yoru’s primary goal is to defeat Chainsaw Man, who once devoured a significant portion of her existence. Despite her status as a once-powerful devil, she is significantly weaker. Therefore, this goal of hers is important and personal, as it would be the key to regaining her strength and continuing to spread conflicts, war, and fear in the world.

The War Devil still has formidable skills, and she knows how to use them in a way that makes her a significant threat. These abilities are powered by her connection to the concept of war and fear. This helps her manipulate and weaponize the world. Let’s talk about her most deadly abilities in detail:

  • Weaponization of Objects: Yoru has the ability to turn anything she wants into a weapon of choice by claiming ownership of it. This means that she has to touch the object and declare it as hers. The more emotional connection she has to it, the stronger it will be.
  • Regeneration and Durability: Like other powerful devils, Yoru also has the ability to regenerate. This helps her recover from fatal injuries by consuming blood. This skill makes it difficult for opponents to kill her.
  • Physical Strength and Speed: She has great speed and strength, which help when she is in direct combat with others. This ability, in combination with her weaponization power, makes her a significant threat in close-range combat.
  • Reincarnation: If Yoru is killed on Earth, the War Devil will reincarnate in Hell, making her essentially immortal.

The War Devil vs. Other Devils in Chainsaw Man

Denji, as Chainsaw Man, is one of the strongest devils in the series because he can erase the existence of any devil by consuming them. The War Devil’s powers are somewhat lacking in comparison to the raw strength and regeneration capabilities of Chainsaw Man. Currently, in the series, Denji is clearly stronger than Yoru. The only way she would have the upper hand would be due to her tactical mindset, which could pose a challenge if she faces Chainsaw Man in a direct fight.

Makima, the previous Control Devil, had the ability to control others. She had surpassed most devils and dominated other creatures. She was a great antagonist. In comparison, the War Devil does not have the same level of overwhelming power or the same kind of influence over others that Makima did.

The Darkness Devil is one of the most terrifying characters in Chainsaw Man, representing the primal fear of darkness. Its abilities far exceed those of most devils, including the War Devil. If the War Devil were to face the Darkness Devil, it would likely be at a severe disadvantage. Darkness is a fear far more universal than war, meaning that the Darkness Devil is fundamentally stronger in Chainsaw Man’s fear-based power system.

The War Devil’s Role in the Story

The War Devil’s role in this story started when she inhabited Asa’s body. She acted as a guide and antagonist during Asa’s character development arc. Asa, the host body, has trust issues. She often questions her identity and struggles with taking a side when it comes to revenge, making her a complex character. Her interactions with Yoru help with character development. At the same time, Yoru’s hatred toward Chainsaw Man drives her to seek vengeance.

Asa’s evolving feelings toward Denji as a romantic interest affect Yoru too. This opens up the possibility of them potentially becoming allies rather than sworn enemies. If the story develops in a way where the War Devil regains all the power she has lost, she could become the main antagonist in Part 2. She could reshape the world by influencing people to go to war on a global scale.

Currently, we are not sure where her true role stands. As viewers, we can sit back and wait until we finally know what the War Devil chooses to act on.

Weaknesses and Limitations

Despite having amazing powers, the War Devil has some weaknesses and limitations that could result in her losing a fight.

  1. Diminished Power – The War Devil is currently weaker due to humanity’s reduced fear of war. This prevents her from fully unleashing her true potential. Chainsaw Man has also eaten most of her children, who were responsible for continuing to spread fear, and right now, the only one who is doing any damage is one of her children called the Gun Devil.
  2. Dependence on Emotional Connections – The War Devil’s strongest weapon is based on personal attachment. For Yoru to claim someone, she relies on Asa to feel guilt, which would help turn the chosen object into a powerful weapon.
  3. Conflicted Relationship with Asa – Since Asa and Yoru share a body, they are constantly in conflict. Asa’s reluctance to kill hinders the War Devil’s effectiveness, preventing her from acting with complete autonomy.

Conclusion

The War Devil is undeniably one of the strongest devils in Chainsaw Man, especially as a member of the Four Horsemen. As Chainsaw Man Part 2 progresses, the War Devil’s true potential may be unlocked. Whether she becomes Denji’s greatest enemy or a reluctant ally, her presence ensures that the series remains as unpredictable and thrilling as ever.
