Terapagos has fallen a bit in the Pokemon VGC pecking order in recent times, mostly because of its poor matchup against Zamazenta. However, going in unprepared for this Legendary is not recommended. Its high bulk, wide movepool, and access to the spread move Tera Starstorm make Terapagos a worthwhile Pokemon to bring to Worlds 2025.
How to Use Terapagos in Pokemon VGC?
Terapagos has an amazing stat spread when Terastallized into its Stellar form, with its best stat being its 160 HP. Additionally, its ability Tera Shell reduces the damage of any attack done to it when it is at full HP by half. These two factors ensure its longevity.
One of Terapagos’ flaws, so to speak, is its need to boost its offenses at least once. It needs to do so to ensure that its moves can KO threats like Miraidon and Kyogre. So let’s break down the best build for Terapagos in VGC.
Terapagos’ Best Moves for VGC
Tera Starstorm is a must as a powerful spread move that not only deals super effective damage to Tera Pokemon, but has no drawbacks like recoil or stat drops, and can be spammed repeatedly. Its best coverage move is Earth Power, letting it hit Pokemon like Incineroar, Crowned Zamazenta, and Miraidon for super effective damage. Protect is a must for obvious reasons. That leaves the final spot, which will have to be the boosting move.
Calm Mind is usually the preferred choice here, giving it a +1 in Special Attack and Special Defense. This is usually enough to KO the aforementioned threats. However, alternatively, if you want to attack while setting up, you can consider using the Rock-type move Meteor Beam. Not only does the move deal damage, but boosts Special Attack by one stage before doing so.
It does have a drawback of being a two-turn move, which all but guarantees that Terapagos’ Item Slot will be burdened by Power Herb to use Meteor Beam in a single turn. However, as it is a consumable and can only be used once, picking the right moment to use Meteor Beam matters.
There is also an option of using the move Rock Polish to boost Terapagos’ Speed by two stages.
Terapagos’ Best Items for VGC
As mentioned above, Power Herb becomes a necessity on Meteor Beam sets. However, Leftovers is the best choice in Calm Mind sets as it will let you recover some HP passively each turn. With the help of Protect, this recovery can even let it use Tera Shell over and over again in a single match.
Covert Cloak is another option that protects Terapagos from the secondary effects of moves like flinches from Fake Out or Special Attack drops from Snarl.
Terapagos’ Best Teammates for VGC
These Pokemon are great partners for Terapagos:
- Smeargle: The Pokemon with the vast move pool returns again. Smeargle can learn a host of moves thanks to its move Sketch, which lets it copy them. Common moves that can help out Terapagos include Fake Out, Follow Me, Encore, and Decorate.
- Miraidon: As you are allowed two Restricted Legendaries, why not pair them? Miraidon is arguably the best Restricted Legendary in the format and can be ludicrously powerful. The fact that it sets up Electric Terrain gives Terapagos the chance to hold an Electric Seed for a single Defense boost.
