Path of Exile 2, like its predecessor, offers a vast array of quests, each with its own set of choices and consequences. Almost every other quest in the game offers multiple branching paths based on the decisions you make while going through the main story. Furthermore, certain quests are divided into multiple sub-quests with multiple objectives.

One such quest is A Theft of Ivory, which sees the player venture into the Mastodon Badlands in search of Mastodon Tusks. On the surface, it’s a pretty straightforward questline. However, like any other main story quest in Path of Exile 2, A Theft of Ivory offers multiple branching paths, as well as sub-quests that you need to complete in order to obtain the final reward.

Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to complete the A Theft of Ivory quest in Path of Exile 2. Do note that since it’s a main story quest, this guide will feature spoilers.

Objectives for A Theft of Ivory Quest in Path of Exile 2

A Theft of Ivory takes place during the Trail of Corruption, right after you return from The Halini Gates. Although A Theft of Ivory can be completed any time during The Trail of Corruption, it’s best to complete it right at the start to obtain the Uncut Spirit Gem at the earliest.

To start the quest, you first need to speak to Sekhema Azara in Ardura Caravan. It should be noted that at the end of A Theft of Ivory, you will have to fight two bosses, Iktab, the Deathlord, and Ekbab, Ancient Steed, who are important to the main story. As such, completing this quest will progress the main story, locking you out of certain story-related choices. That said, here are the main objectives of A Theft of Ivory:

  • Use the Desert Map to travel to Mastodon Badlands
  • Search the Mastodon Badlands for the entrance to the Bone Pits
  • Search the Bone Pits for the Mastodon Tusks
  • Defeat Ekbab, Ancient Steed and Iktab, the Deathlord
  • Return to the Ardura Caravan and Talk to Zarka

Getting to the Mastodon Badlands is a straightforward process in Path of Exile 2. Simply open the Desert map and select Mastodon Bandlands. It should be noted that the Mastodon Badlands is a Level 21 area. Furthermore, the Bone Pits, where you need to go in search of the Mastodon Tusks, is a Level 22 area. Make sure you’re equipped with level-appropriate gear before taking on this quest.

Once you’re in the Mastodon Badlands, it’s just a matter of a bit of exploration before you stumble upon the Bone Pits. If you’re having trouble finding the Bone Pits, you can locate it by looking for a glowing door among the huge pile of bones.

Where To Find the Mastodon Tusks

Once you find the Bone Pits, head inside and look for the Blackrib Pits. The Blackrib Pits is essentially at the heart of the Bone Pits and is home to the quest’s bosses – Iktab, the Deathlord, and Ekbab, Ancient Steed.

To obtain the Mastodon Tusks, you will need to defeat Iktab as his steed, Ektab. Despite the intimidating stature of the bosses, Iktab and his steed are quite easy to deal with. Both bosses rely on area-of-effect (AOE) attacks. Ekbab mostly ground slams, whereas Iktab uses ranged AOEs. Thankfully, the AOEs are incredibly well-telegraphed and are quite easy to dodge and punish. We recommend using a ranged weapon for efficiency.

Once you defeat Iktab, the Deathlord, and Ekbab, Ancient Steed, you will be rewarded with not only the Mastodon Tusks but also the Uncut Spirit Gems.
