Lagiacrus, the highly anticipated Leviathan, has finally made its debut in a current-gen mainline Monster Hunter game. And much like the monster’s original appearance in Monster Hunter Tri, Lagiacrus in Monster Hunter Wilds is a spectacle to behold. While not as powerful as the Apex Leviathan, Jin Dahaad, Lagiacrus still packs a punch.

Coming to the game as part of title update 2, Lagiacrus is a significant step up in difficulty compared to other regular High Rank monsters. On some levels, the monster is even more challenging than Mizutsune. While Lagiacrus retains most of his attacks from his earlier appearances, there are some new combos in MH Wilds, which do spice up the encounter.

There’s also a special “underwater sequence” during the boss fight, which can be a tad confusing at first. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to easily defeat Lagiacrus in Monster Hunter Wilds TU2.

Overview of Lagiacrus in Monster Hunter Wilds

Lagiacrus is a Leviathan-class monster, and much like Mizutsune, it’s meant to be an endgame encounter. Much like other Leviathans, Lagiacrus is quite agile and also has access to elemental attacks. Lagiacrus’ scales on its back allow it to create and dissipate electrical charges. This is what the monster uses to both attack and repel the Hunters. In addition to that, in its enraged state, the Leviathan can use lightning to attack anything in front of it.

Furthermore, Lagiacrus also uses lightning AOE (area-of-effect) as a counterattack. Although the monster can dish out a ton of physical damage, it mostly relies on lightning-based attacks. In addition to all that, Lagiacrus can also use its lightning attacks underwater.

In addition to lightning, Lagiacrus has access to a few regular (physical) combos. However, these attacks are relatively easy to avoid and punish with a counterattack. In Monster Hunter Wilds, Lagiacrus has access to two new “gimmicks.”

Firstly, much like Arkveld, whenever Lagiacrus charges its elemental combos, it leaves the monster briefly vulnerable to a Focus Strike. After an electrical discharge, Lagiacrus’ back becomes a weak spot, which can be capitalized on with a Focus Strike.

The other gimmick is what the monster does when close to its critical HP. Right before Lagiacrus’ HP drops close to critical, it moves underwater (close to its nest) and starts charging a huge AOE. If you fail to interrupt this AOE in time, it instantly kills (carts) you and your allies. This attack is somewhat similar to Zoh Shia’s Fire AOE. To interrupt this AOE, you need to head underwater and attack the monster.

Weakness of Lagiacrus

Lagiacrus shares the same weaknesses as Mizutsune, i.e., breakable Head, Back, Legs, and Tail. However, unlike Mizutsune, Lagiacrus is much more armored across its entire body. As such, wounding the monster is quite difficult, especially with blunt weapons. However, tenderizing the monster’s flesh does eventually open it up for wounds (in phase 2).

In addition to that, Lagiacrus is weak to Fireblight, Iceblight, and Dragonblight. Also, it’s weak to all status ailments. However, due to its armor and resistance to Lightning, Paralysis, and Stun aren’t all that effective against Lagiacrus. Thankfully, you can use Flash Pods to stun the monster.

Also, both Shock and Pitfall Traps work on Lagiacrus.

How To Easily Defeat Lagiacrus in MH Wilds?

Here are some tips to help you easily defeat Lagiacrus in Monster Hunter Wilds:

  • The battle against Lagiacrus is divided into two phases. However, both phases are mostly identical, which can be a tad confusing for some players. The identifier for the first and second phases is the frequency of Lagiacrus’ enraged form. In the first phase, Lagiacrus tends to frequently dip in and out of the enraged form, which it telegraphs with its back scales glowing blue.
  • In its enraged state, Lagiacrus usually relies on lightning attacks. However, in the first phase, most of the monster’s attacks are quite easy to dodge. Ideally, you want to get in most of your damage within the first phase. In the second phase, your objective would be to create wounds and destroy them for elemental damage.
  • We highly recommend using Blast or Dragonblight weapons. Both these elements, alongside the Critical Element skill, work wonders against the Leviathan. Furthermore, make sure to keep Nulberries handy to heal through the Lightning debuff. Do note that once afflicted with Lightning, your Stamina consumption and damage received will be increased, temporarily.
  • For the first phase, if you’re using a heavier weapon, like the Great Sword, we recommend using Traps to get a few combos on the monster. Additionally, we recommend mounting the monster right at the start of the battle to get a free stagger and opportunity to create wounds. If you’re playing in co-op, we highly recommend bringing at least one Heavy Bowgun in the team.
  • Much like Mizutsune, Lagiacrus is mostly weak to elemental damage. As such, your priority would be to rely on skills that amplify elements and also Affinity. Once it transitions to the second phase, Lagiacrus doesn’t physically change, but does become more enraged (identified by charged back-crystals).
  • In the second phase, Lagiacrus will go underwater, which is the trickiest part of the encounter. However, countering this part of the battle is quite easy. Essentially, you need to dodge Lagiacrus’ initial barrage of attacks (press X to dodge sideways, or press R2/R1 to dodge upwards and downward). While dodging, you can also pick up Helix Piercing Pods and fire them at the monster.
  • Once Lagiacrus is staggered, press R2 and then R1 to clutch-grab the monster. Follow the grab with either R1 or Triangle inputs to deal damage to Lagiacrus. Repeat this process a few times until you get an automated cutscene where the Hunter sticks to Lagiacrus’ head and deals massive amounts of damage.
  • Do note that you need to target Lagiacrus’ head during this phase since it’s the primary weak spot. Apart from that, you can also temporarily immobilize the monster by severing its tail or breaking its back.
