The Rotted Woods is easily the most challenging Shifting Earth event in Elden Ring Nightreign. While most Shifting Earth events come with their fair share of challenges, the Rotted Woods take the cake in terms of pure difficulty simply because you’re constantly inflicted with Scarlet Rot in the area. However, if you keep a keen eye out for clues, you can actually negate the Scarlet Rot damage and make going through the locale significantly easier. However, as is the case with secrets in souls-likes, especially the ones crafted by FromSoftware, finding the clues to the secret of the Rotted Woods is far from easy. In fact, to figure out the secret, you will need to have a good understanding of the map and the enemies.
Here’s a comprehensive guide on the secret of the Rotted Woods in Elden Ring Nightreign and how to unlock it.
How To Reach the Rotted Woods in Elden Ring Nightreign
The Rotted Woods only appear if you have a Shifting Earth event enabled for your Expeditions. The Shifting Earth events in Elden Ring Nightreign are random and can appear at any time you defeat a Nightlord. You can check which Shifting Earth event you have active on the Expeditions menu. If you have a Rotted Woods Shifting Earth event active, you will see the southern part of Limveld covered in Rot. You can technically reach the area on Day 1. However, ideally, you want to go to the Rotted Woods on Day 2, with at least Level 9 and Epic weapons. Additionally, when the Rotted Woods Shifting Earth event is active, you will eventually have to make it to the Woods anyway.
This is due to the fact that, with the Rotted Woods event, Day 2 always ends at the southern part of the map, near the Scarlet Rot village. As such, ideally, you want to complete the Rotted Woods event much before the rain boxes you into the Scarlet Rot village. Once you reach the Rotted Woods, it’s a matter of simply navigating to the nearest castle, grabbing the hint for the secret, and locating it.
How To Find the Secret in Rotted Woods
To find the secret in the Rotted Woods, head to the castle with the Scarlet Rot affinity. Once you reach the castle, you should ideally clear the mob as well as the boss (Knight) to get a breather. After clearing the castle of hostiles, loot the map past the boss arena. With the secret map in your possession, open Limveld’s map and mark the location of the secret. Usually, the secret (Scarlet Flower Bud) shows up toward the northeast of the castle. However, there have been a few instances in our playthrough where the secret showed up towards the west, which is a bit difficult to navigate. Once you reach the location of the secret, make your way to the top of the Scarlet Rot tree.
At the top of the tree, you will find a Scarlet Rot Bud, which you can interact with. Upon interacting with the Bud, Scarlet Rot will be nullified, and you will also gain a boon that increases defense and attack power. You want to complete this event on Day 2 as quickly as possible, since that gives you ample time to hunt down a few world bosses and level up, without having to worry about getting inflicted by Scarlet Rot. Do note that the Scarlet Rot village is inhabited by a Balck Blade Kindred and a Bell-Bearing Hunter.
These bosses are quite challenging, and while they do offer pretty good loot, defeating them isn’t easy. As such, unless you’re already Level 12 and have enough time before the night, we recommend avoiding these bosses.
