Everything you need to know about how to obtain the Chainsaw in Silent Hill 2 Remake 2, including the weapon’s location, use cases, and more.
The Chainsaw is obtained in Silent Hill 2 Remake’s New Game Plus mode. Similarly to the original Silent Hill 2, the remake is very limiting when it comes to doling out weapons. Unlike other contemporary survival-horror games, Silent Hill 2 isn’t focused on combat. As you progress through the game, you only get to unlock a handful of weapons – the Handgun, Shotgun, and Rifle. And even when you get these weapons, you can seldom make use of them. This is due to the ammunition for these ranged weapons being extremely limited. However, to counteract the lack of ranged options, you do get a rather potent melee weapon in Silent Hill 2.
You start the game with a Wooden Board. This weapon isn’t very powerful but gets the job done, at least in the opening hours of the game. However, after completing the Wood Side Apartments section of the game, the Wooden Board is replaced by the Steel Pipe. The Steel Pipe is much more damaging than the Wooden Board and it is the only melee option you’ll have for the rest of the game. However, there’s another incredibly powerful melee weapon in the game – the Chainsaw.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Chainsaw in Silent Hill 2 Remake including how to unlock it, associated achievements, best use cases, and more.
Where to Find the Chainsaw in Silent Hill 2 Remake
The Chainsaw is unlocked exclusively in Silent Hill 2 Remake’s New Game Plus mode. Unfortunately, you cannot get this overpowered weapon on a standard playthrough. However, if you want to make your repeat journey through the town of Silent Hill, you can grab the Chainsaw pretty early. The Chainsaw can be obtained near the Silent Hill Ranch, past the Cemetery. As you make your way past the Ranch, you will hear a loud buzzing noise. The noise indicates the location of the Chainsaw. Right across the Silent Hill Ranch, you will find a pile of logs, with the Chainsaw stuck to it. Simply interact with the Chainsaw to add it to your inventory. Picking up the Chainsaw also unlocks the Lumberjack achievement.
If you’ve played the original Silent Hill 2, you’ll find the Chainsaw’s moveset pretty similar. Furthermore, protagonist James even has the same taunting animations with the Chainsaw equipped, as in the original title. However, there’s no specific button combination to trigger the “taunts.” Instead, James does the Chainsaw taunts randomly, often before encountering a monster or defeating a group of them.
How to Equip the Chainsaw in Silent Hill 2 Remake
Once you get the Chainsaw, you can wield it by pressing RT or R2 (depending on your controller). However, once you progress through the story and obtain the Wooden Board, it will replace the Chainsaw as your primary melee weapon. However, if you want to switch over to the Chainsaw at any time during gameplay, you can do so simply by heading into the Inventory menu and equipping it. Do note that you cannot quick-swap between melee weapons on the fly, akin to the ranged weapons. Instead, you will have to manually equip different melee weapons from the Inventory to switch between them.
Best Use Cases for the Chainsaw in Silent Hill 2 Remake
The Chainsaw is easily the most powerful weapon in the entire game. It’s capable of killing most enemies, excluding bosses, in just a single hit, granted you can land your attacks properly. However, the animation of the Chainsaw is a bit tricky to get used to. Unlike the Steel Pipe or the Wooden Board, the Chainsaw has a longer and slower attack animation. However, it deals a ton of damage and also staggers most enemies. The best use for the Chainsaw is to obtain the As Close As You Like achievement. The As Close As You Like achievement requires you to finish Silent Hill 2 Remake without using any ranged weapons and having the Chainsaw equipped makes it a bit easier to complete this challenge.
