Everything you need to know about the Guardian in Elden Ring Nightreign, including stats, active abilities, and how to use the Nightfarer.

On Paper, the Guardian looks like a Nightfarer that should be fairly straightforward to use in Elden Ring Nightreign. However, that cannot be further from the truth. In fact, it’s one of the most complicated classes in the game, and one that’s highly dependent on not only the right set of Relics but also player skills. The Guardian, much like Raider and Wylder, is meant to be a tank. The primary role of the character is to take an enemy’s aggression head-on and steer them away from the more squishy members of the party. However, doing so means putting yourself in harm’s way, actively. And without proper knowledge of the Nightfarer’s skillset, that can spell doom for an Expedition.
However, if you know how to properly use the Guardian, you can easily stunlock enemies and even bosses, allowing you to not only divert their attacks but also retaliate with your own. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to properly play the Guardian in Elden Ring Nightreign.
Overview of the Guardian in Elden Ring Nightreign

Guardian is a fairly great starting character for the first few Expeditions. However, if you plan to play the game solo, he isn’t a good choice. While Guardian, similar to Wylder, does have a respectable amount of HP, Endurance, and Strength, he cannot dish out good damage. Guardian is mostly meant to be a shield between his allies and a boss, with most of his damage coming from counter-thrusts. Guardian’s passive ability lets him switch to a Steel Guard stance that increases his poise and damage negation while guarding. Additionally, the Character Skill, Whirlwind, lets the Guardian dish out good stagger damage to regular and even elite enemies.
Guardian’s Ultimate Art, Wings of Salvation, is a good option to revive fallen allies. However, outside of that, it’s not all that useful. The Ultimate Art does not deal enough damage to stagger bosses. However, it does offer invincibility frames (i-frames) during the animation. Essentially, Guardian is built as a character that you need to play purely defensively.

Tips To Master the Guardian in Elden Ring Nightreign

Here are some tips that should help you properly use Guardian during Expeditions:
- While Guardian does have good enough Strength to wield Colossal Weapons, it’s best to stick with Halberds. Since Guardian’s skillset primarily involves a defensive style of combat, equipping a Colossal Weapon won’t help much due to lower Arcane scaling. Instead, having a Greatshield equipped helps a lot with using the character at its best.
- Guardian’s Whirlwind ability might not deal enough damage, but it does stagger smaller enemies. Additionally, the Whirlwind can also divert the attention of bosses, which comes in incredibly handy against some of the later Nightlords in the game. You can also increase the duration of the Whirlwind, which increases the overall damage of the skill as well.
- With Guardian, you’re meant to stay at close distance to the enemy. While your guarding abilities do work even without a shield, having one helps negate additional damage. Guardian’s Steel Guard ability essentially lets you guard most attacks, even the final boss’s elemental combo, without taking any damage. However, make sure to keep an eye on your Stamina gauge.
- Since Guardian’s Ultimate Art isn’t all that effective at dishing out damage, it’s best kept reserved to revive allies. Essentially, you need to play Guardian as not the team’s primary damage-dealer, but a healer and also, a shield.
