To start off, you spawn in the game with a backpack and an axe. You will have to fuel up your vehicle in the beginning to start driving. Once you begin your journey, you will have to keep refueling the vehicle to keep travelling further. The enemies will pose a challenge at the beginning, but you can make easy work of them if you have some weapons. You can also pick up some upgrades for your vehicle by scavenging for them. These upgrades can include better tires, guard rails, and mounted weapons.
