You can use merchants in Civilization 7 to set up trade routes with both your settlements and friendly independent powers. To set up a trade route with one of your own settlements, you need to send one of the Merchant Units to the settlement of your choice. Next, click on the unit to bring up a menu on the bottom right. In this unit submenu, click on the button that reads “Create Trade Route.” This will set up a trade route linking you to the settlement.
If you wish to link up with a foreign independent power, the way to establish a trade route is much the same. You first have to send over your Merchant Units to the borders of the other nation that you wish to form a trade route with. Next, click on your Merchant Unit and look at the tab on the left of your screen. This tab shows you all the possible trade routes that you can set up. Set up the trade route that suits your strategy best, and the road will then spawn as needed.
