He’s not random like some entities; his appearances are tied to sheds and one very simple rule: don’t step on the grass. If you understand his behavior, you can pass right by without a single chase. How The Groundskeeper Works in Doors: The Outdoors
In Doors: The Outdoors, the Groundskeeper appears from wooden garden sheds, so if you spot one, be ready for him. Stepping on green grass while he can see you will make him hostile, and you cannot outrun him because he’s faster than you. If you stay on safe surfaces like dirt paths, stone walkways, bridges, or inside buildings, he won’t attack.
Note: Avoiding grass will eventually make him return to his shed and despawn.
Survival Tips
- There’s a scythe next to a shed; if it’s missing, he’s active nearby and can get triggered, so move cautiously.
- Move only along dirt, stone, wood, or bridge routes. If you must cross grass, do it when he’s facing away and move quickly to avoid alarming him.
- If he’s blocking your way, wait for him to walk away or return to his shed.
- Closets won’t save you; if he’s already chasing you, he can simply pull you out.
- If another player draws his attention, you can slip past, but it’s very risky and should only be done if necessary.
What Happens if You’re Caught
The Groundskeeper ends your run instantly. Unless you’ve placed a Lotus Flower checkpoint, you’ll restart the subfloor from the beginning.
