Everything you need to know about the Duchess in Elden Ring Nightreign, including her abilities, passives, and how to unlock the Nightfarer.

The Duchess is arguably the most fascinating character (Nightfarer) in Elden Ring Nightreign. Unlike other playable characters in the game, Duchess’ toolset relies on deception and passive buffs for the team. She’s essentially the “stealthy” character in the roster, but one that packs a mighty punch, if used correctly. Duchess is also one of the two “optional” characters that aren’t unlocked right from the get-go. Instead, you will need to progress through the game’s first story arc, obtain a special item, and then use it to unlock this mysterious character. However, if you’re a fan of the “Thief” starter class in souls-likes, it’s totally worth unlocking the Duchess at the earliest.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Duchess and how to unlock her as a playable character in Elden Ring Nightreign.
Note: This article contains spoilers for Elden Ring Nightreign’s main story.
Where To Find the Duchess in Elden Ring Nightreign?

The Duchess can be found at the Roundtable Hold, right after the prologue. In fact, she is the very first character you talk to in the game. However, at the very start of Nightreign’s story, the Duchess stays her blade away from combat. While she doesn’t make her intentions clear right at the start, her choice not to head to the Lands Between has something to do with her past. However, once you defeat the first main story boss, Tricephalos, you can go back to the Duchess in the Roundtable Hold and offer her the Old Pocketwatch; she ultimately decides to join the Nightfarers. You can further complete the Duchess’ Remembrances to get more context on her past.
How To Unlock the Duchess
To unlock the Duchess, you need to defeat the first main story boss of Elden Ring Nightreign, Tricephalos (Gladius, Beast of Night). Once Tricephalos is defeated, you will obtain the Old Pocketwatch Relic. With the Old Pocketwatch in your possession, head to the maiden in Roundtable Hold. Talk to the maiden and offer her the Old Pocketwatch. After this process, it is revealed that she was the Duchess after all. After a small cutscene, the Duchess will be added to the roster as a playable character. You can change between different Nightfarers using the Banished Knight statue near the Roundtable.
Duchess’ Abilities and Passives

The Duchess is a dexterous character with abilities that rely on stealth and deception. The Nightfarer’s passive ability, Magnificent Poise, allows her to quickly dodge after successive attacks. She also employs the Quick Step skill as her dodge, giving you more flexibility to avoid damage. Due to her Step Dodge, the Duchess is also the best character in terms of i-frames (invincibility frames). Furthermore, the Duchess’ character skill, Restage, allows her to reprise recent occurrences during combat and deal damage to the enemy’s visage.
Essentially, the Duchess can use the Old Pocketwatch to rewind time and summon a spectral form of the enemies. This allows the Nightfarer to deal damage to the spectral form, which in turn deals damage to the enemy. This skill comes in incredibly handy against mobs or even bosses with large HP bars. Lastly, Duchess’ Ultimate Art, Finale, allows her to shroud herself and allies, making them invisible to the enemies for a short time.
The invisibility is only active until an ally or the Duchess herself attacks the enemy or the boss. However, the ability remains active if you hit your allies, making it the best option to revive fallen Nightfarers during boss fights.
