Layered Armor in Monster Hunter has always been one of the most important aspects of gameplay and build customization. While it doesn’t have any tangible impact on gameplay per se, it does help give some purpose to the endgame.

By the time you reach Monster Hunter Wilds’ endgame, you will have already settled on a build that you want to use for the Event Quests and Special Investigations. This is where Layered Armor comes into play. Since your stats are already finalized, Layered Armor gives you a reason to participate in the grind, simply to unlock new armor pieces. While you won’t have much use for the armor’s stat, you can still use it as a Layered Armor, to give your Hunter a distinct look.

Simply put, the Layered Armor is Monster Hunter Wilds’ transmogrification system. Here’s everything you need to know about the Layered Armor in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Unlike the past Monster Hunter games, you don’t have to craft Layered Armor separately in Monster Hunter Wilds. Instead, Layered Armor sets are unlocked automatically as you craft High Rank gear. In Low Rank, however, you won’t get access to Layered Armor, save for the pre-order and Deluxe Edition bonuses. However, once you head into High Rank, you will be able to unlock Layered Armor as you craft new armor pieces.

There are also special armor sets that don’t have good stats but do offer value as Layered outfits for the Hunter. As for the pre-order and Deluxe Edition bonuses, there are two different Layered sets available to use – Guild Knight and Feudel Soldier.

In addition to the Hunter’s armor, Layered sets can also be unlocked in the same manner for the Palico. As you craft new Palico gear in High Rank, those armor pieces are also unlocked as Layered sets.

To equip an unlocked Layered Armor, simply head to one of your Pop-up Camps, where you will get the option to select from the various Layered loadouts. Inside the Pop-up Camp, navigate to the Equipment Appearance tab under the Appearance Menu.

Under Equipment Appearance, you can choose Layered Armor for individual pieces. Furthermore, you can also choose to hide (or unhide) a piece of armor. Similarly, you can choose a Layered Armor for the Palico by going to the Palico Equipment Appearance. Here are the steps to equip Layered Armor:

  • Head to a Pop-up camp.
  • Select Equipment Appearance under the Appearance Menu tab.
  • Select your preferred Layered Armor pieces.

You can also save a custom Layered Armor loadout. Once you’re done deciding on a Layered Armor combination, simply press L3 or LS to enter the Loadout menu. To register a new Layered Armor Loadout, press Y or Triangle on an empty field. Saving a Loadout allows you to load it instantly, without having to search through the various Layered Armor pieces all over again.
