The peace that Hyrule earned at the end of The Hands of Evil was short-lived, and reports of shades rattled the inhabitants of the land. In Growing Suspicion, Rauru wishes to deal with these shades to settle the unrest for good. Offering aid to Rauru is the ever-suspicious Ganondorf.

In the Growing Suspicion battle, Rauru and Ganondorf set forth for Mount Hylia, forming an uneasy alliance to deal with the shades. This is one of the more intriguing battles in the game, largely due to its narrative context. If the quest is giving you any sort of trouble, our guide will walk you through it.

Before the Growing Suspicion battle begins, you’re shown a short cutscene of Zelda and Sonia back at the castle. The two hear reports of a Zelda lookalike roaming around in the castle, and the game then shifts back to Rauru’s journey, kicking off the Growing Suspicion battle.

As soon as you take control of Rauru, you’ll see all the shades you were hearing rumors about. Cut through the path ahead and head west on the map. Kill all the shades you find because they will drop Poes for you to use.

Stick to the northernmost road of the map, and continue heading west to reach the first outpost. You’ll find a Hylian Soldier on the brink of death here. Defeat all the shades in this area to rescue him, which will then open the gate ahead.

Pass through the gate, and the road will then begin to circle around to the south. Stick to this path, killing shades along the way, to reach the second outpost. This is where you’ll have to fight Captain Construct I. Defeat Captain Construct, and the locked gate before you will open. Before you can exit, however, Rauru will realize that Ganondorf is nowhere to be seen. Was this all a ploy to lead him away from the castle? Before you can ponder over this mystery, the Gerudo Assassin will appear, confirming the conspiracy.

The Gerudo Assassin is here to kill Rauru. Now, playing as Rauru, you have to fend off the ambush in the camp. The assassin is a melee-range boss, using fast-paced attacks to overwhelm you. You can’t deal with these attacks in any other way except by blocking. Do not try to Perfect Guard. Block her attacks and use the window between them to lash out.

As you drop her health to the halfway point, you’ll kick off phase two of the fight. Two shades will join the fray, and you’ll have to beat all three here. Thankfully, Rauru is well-equipped to deal with large numbers. The sweeping attacks will help you deal damage to all three. Defeat this boss to unlock the path ahead.

Take the new path, which leads to Hyrule Castle. You’ll have to fight a Stone Talus and another Gerudo Assassin along the way. The former is a rather annoying enemy due to its firm defenses. Use shield breakers to break through and expose its weak point. Then, exploit this weak point to deal tons of damage and defeat the Stone Talus.

Once the Stone Talus is out of the way, you’ll have the Gerudo Assassin in a fair 1v1. You’ll have to use the same strategy as last time to beat this boss. Block, and then exploit the openings in between to deal damage and defeat the enemy. This will then unlock the gate. Pass through the gate, and you’ll then reach Hyrule Castle.

As you reach the castle, you’ll find it under attack by the shades. A nameless construct stands in your path, and you have to defeat this enemy. This enemy is a bit tricky, but as long as you counter his dangerous attacks with the R button, you’ll pull through. Defeat this enemy to complete the Growing Suspicion battle.
