Everything you need to know about Doom The Dark Ages’ online modes, and whether a Bethesda Account (Bethesda.net) is required or not.

The release of Doom: The Dark Ages is right around the corner, with pre-loads going live on all platforms. However, despite the game being available for pre-load, very little information is available regarding its online modes. Doom The Dark Ages is a “spiritual” follow-up to 2020’s Doom Eternal and 2016’s Doom. In terms of its narrative, The Dark Ages is technically a prequel to Doom (2016).
However, as was the case in Eternal, The Dark Ages’ story does deviate a lot from the established lore of Doom (2016) and can be categorized as a “spin-off.” While both Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal are known for their stellar single-player campaign, they also feature robust multiplayer modes. And hence the Bethesda Account requirement.
Doom The Dark Ages, on the other hand, is a purely single-player game with no multiplayer aspect. As such, players might be curious whether the game has a mandatory Bethesda Account requirement a la Doom Eternal. Much like its predecessors, Doom The Dark Ages does feature a Bethesda Account login system, accessible via the main menu. However, there’s a silver lining – the Bethesda Account is not mandatory in the latest Doom.
Here’s everything you need to know about Doom The Dark Ages, and its Bethesda Account requirement.
Do You Need A Bethesda Account To Play Doom The Dark Ages?

No, you don’t need a Bethesda Account to play Doom: The Dark Ages on any platform (even Battle.net). Unlike Doom Eternal, you can play The Dark Ages from start to finish without ever being forced into a Bethesda Account logging screen. This used to be one of the biggest gripes players had against Doom Eternal.
Although the game was received quite well among critics and players alike, the forced Bethesda.net account requirement was a major deal-breaker for many. The backlash against the forced Bethesda Account login eventually led to id Software removing it from the game during the launch of Battlemode 2.0. However, there were still some caveats.
The Bethesda Account wasn’t mandatory in Doom Eternal’s single-player mode. However, the multiplayer Battlemode did require players to log in using a Bethesda.net account. Thankfully, that’s no longer the case for Doom: The Dark Ages.
You can still log in using a Bethesda Account, but that’s completely optional. Logging in using a Bethesda.net account will allow you to access the game’s official newsletter via the main menu. It’s also possible that id Software might tie post-launch rewards and cosmetics to Bethesda.net, akin to Doom Eternal.
However, as of the writing of this article, no official statement regarding the post-launch roadmap has been revealed by id Software and Bethesda Softworks.
Can You Play Doom The Dark Ages Offline?
Yes, Doom The Dark Ages can be played offline. However, there are some caveats. On PC, launching the game for the first time will require you to stay connected to the internet. This is due to the game’s use of Denuvo DRM. After the initial launch, you can play the game offline.
On consoles, there’s no similar requirement. You can play the game offline right off the bat. However, note that on PlayStation, the physical version requires an additional download before you can play it. The Blu-ray disc for Doom The Dark Ages’ PS5 version only comes with 85 MB of data, i.e., the game’s license.
