Black Myth Wukon is not set to arrive on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 at launch. This will likely not come as a surprise to fans who have been following the game’s development and have seen the graphics involved. While the status may change in the future with the game’s success driving its expansion onto other platforms, there is no official communication on the same at the time of writing

Why is Black Myth Wukong not arriving on Xbox One and PS4? Possibilities explored

While we have not heard the Game Science devs talk about the matter, the biggest roadblock we assume is the technical limitations of the previous generation of consoles at this point. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are more than a decade old at this point. The game’s switch to Unreal Engine 5 during development also means that Black Myth Wukong will likely require significant hardware power to run it in its full glory.

Keeping all this in mind, it makes sense that the developers chose to avoid launching the game on previous-gen consoles at launch. As mentioned earlier, an Xbox One / PS4 port might happen depending on the game’s success. We already saw a similar strategy with last year’s runaway hit Hogwarts Legacy, where the game initially launched on current-gen consoles and PC and then onto Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch later on. It remains to be seen whether Game Science takes a similar approach.

Black Myth Wukong is arriving on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 20, 2024, with four editions available for purchase. The game is also confirmed for Xbox Series X|S but the release on the same has been indefinitely delayed. Game Science mentioned in a FAQ:

“We are currently optimizing the Xbox Series X|S version to meet our quality standards, so it won’t release simultaneously with the other platforms. We apologize for the delay and aim to minimize the wait for Xbox users. We will announce the release date as soon as it meets our quality standards.”

The Xbox Series S’s hardware may be the culprit behind this delay. Baldur’s Gate 3 faced issues with Xbox Series S optimization, resulting in a delay. A Microsoft spokesperson responded later on the Black Myth Wukong Xbox Series X|S delay (as reported by Windows Central):

“We’re excited for the launch of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms. We can’t comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders, but we remain focused on making Xbox the best platform for gamers, and great games are at the center of that.”
