Will previous-generation console players be able to enjoy Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 on devices like Xbox One and PS4?
We are currently in the era of the new generation of consoles but does that mean that Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 has abandoned PS4 and Xbox One completely? Well, the gaming community wouldn’t be shocked considering the fact that all development studios are making use of the new hardware.
To everybody’s surprise, though, the official website for Civilization 7, the game, has confirmed that it will also be coming to previous generation consoles. This includes devices like PS4 and Xbox One. If you are a Sid Meier’s Civilization fan and still play on previous gen, then this is happy news for you!
Not only PS4 and Xbox One, the game is also coming to Nintendo Switch. Technically, it is still a current-gen from the company because there has been no other Switch so far. However, considering how old the hardware has been, it is just as wonderful that Switch is also getting this game. PC players who use Mac and Linux as OS will also be getting this game. Moreover, it will be available on the Epic Games Store as well.
There is one more surprise for PS4 and Xbox One players who may be planning to buy PS5 or Xbox Series X|S in the near or distant future.
Buying Civilization 7 for Xbox One and PS4 Will be Worth It
Let’s assume that you buy the game right now for your previous generation console and upgrade to the current-gen later this year or even next year. Will that nullify your purchase? The short answer is no.
2k didn’t monetize on a cross-generation bundle for this game. Meaning that all editions of Civilization 7 will be cross-gen. So, even if you buy the game on PS4 or Xbox One, you will be able to play it on your PS5 and Xbox Series, no matter when you decide to buy one.
If you purchased the game digitally, the console store will simply have the option to let you download the appropriate generation version of the game. Physical copies work a bit differently though.
Xbox players will have access to a dual-binary disc. A technology, which will be used in all physical copies that Xbox users buy. This way, the disc for Civilization 7 will run in both generations of consoles.
As for PlayStation, things are a bit different. Dual-gen entitlement doesn’t work the same way for PS4 and PS5. The game is only available digitally on PS4. So, the digital copy will be available for download on your PS5 without extra charges. The physical copy, on the other hand, is only for PS5 users.
