With Elden Ring Nightreign releasing on May 30, 2025, many people have been wondering if it is a live service.
FromSoftware releases always create a lot of buzz in the gaming community, usually for good reason. The latest in their long history of games is Elden Ring Nightreign, a spin-off game based on the immensely popular 2022 title, Elden Ring.
Nightreign aims to take a shift from the traditional Souls and FromSoftware formula by going in a new direction. Naturally, this has left many fans puzzled regarding the nature of the game. One of these is regarding Elden Ring Nightreign’s status as a live-service game.

Should Elden Ring Nightreign Be Considered a Live-Service Game?
If we want to define Nightreign as a live-service game, we’d first have to understand the qualities of a live-service game. Traditionally, these games try to retain the engagement of players in the long term.
This is usually done through limited-time events, micro-transactions, and other time-gated activities, which will incentivize the player to keep playing. Coming to Nightreign, it does not contain any of the above-mentioned aspects. The developers have also previously stated that the game will be a complete package. You do not need to pay anything extra to unlock something new (apart from the Deluxe Edition).
Lastly, the developers haven’t revealed any plans to have seasonal or regular updates to the game, which will add content. Apart from the usual bug fixes, and patch updates at least.
A better example of a live-service game would be something like Marvel Rivals, Overwatch 2, or Fortnite. These games regularly organize limited-time events and have seasonal battle pass rewards as well. Overall, these techniques make user engagement grow.
